Tri City Living
I have recently accepted a job offer w/ Dow in Midland and will be starting work in early June after I graduate from Virginia Tech. I need to know where the best place for me to live would be.
I've lived in Mt. Pleasant before when I worked at Dow as an intern in Midland so I have seen Midland and know what it is like--boring, or so it seems. I've driven through some parts of Saginaw and have not been impressed. I've never been to Bay City but hear good things about it.
I'm obviously young and do not have a family so right now my best option looks to be Bay City, as Midland is nice but seems to be a much more family oriented place while Saginaw seems like a mini Detroit or Toledo (where I grew up). I still have friends in Mt. Pleasant who go to CMU and will probably go there most weekends but I would like to have a lively area to live around--one that contains local shops, bars, and other such businesses. I love cities like Chicago and DC and would like to have an atmosphere similar to it, or as much so as I can manage around this area.
As I said before I'm from SE Michigan, so cold and snow is nothing I'm not used to, even coming from Virginia. Please just let me know what you think about my situation. Thanks.

Sound like you won't like the area. Many would just appreciate the job. Why don't you pass on this one and let someone have it that is not so picky.

Noted.
However, passing on jobs out of college isn't very advisable at this point. I think I'll stick with the high paying job with a reputable company directly out of college in a terrible economy that will most likely only get worse.

Personally I think Bay City is your best bet. It has a hooters, and lots of water. What more could you want?

What about just living in Mt Pleasant? Honestly none of the Tri-Cities are especially like the big cities you prefer, and if you'll be hanging out in Mt Pleasant with friends, you could live there and commute to Midland. I know others who make that drive and it's not too bad. Also because you're young, if you're interested in the bar scene at all I wouldn't totally write off Saginaw. The township is pretty safe to live in and the "Old Town" area has all the local shops, bars and places to hear live music with a lot of people hanging out in them. They have a lot of activities in the summer too, like free outdoor movie nights (usually "edgier" type movies rather than family fare per se), an art fair, etc. Bay City is not bad, but even though I wouldn't want to live inside the city of Saginaw per se, Saginaw is by far the largest of the three Tri-Cities and would give you the most access to some of the amenities you're seeking.
