That's what I miss about SoCal, I'm originally from Michigan but haven't lived there since 1969.
Hubby and I ended up in Indiana. It was never on my radar. We were focused on North Carolina actually but nothing ever panned out. Also the wages were a lot lower and even though the cost of living is cheaper in NC, it didnt give us a life style change that we hoped for. Living by the ocean wasnt an option as my husband's line of work was more located centrally in the state.
When my husband had his interview here we kind of just joked about how we were going to waste gas. But the job offer was a lot better than we imagined and the salary was significantly larger than his job in Michigan. The company seemed eager to have him and they set us up with a realtor and provided us with packets of information on the area. We did not experience any kind of problem being new to town as people seemed quite welcoming. Cost of living is cheaper here but the biggest impact were property taxes. We live so close to the MI border we could have purchased a home there. But with the difference in taxes, we could afford about 70k more in a house. Crazy! So we bought on this side of the state line.
This isnt my dream place and I still have a hard time adjusting to how backwards Indiana can be on things. We didnt get better weather or great scenery but we did adopt a comfortable lifestyle. That was our peace of mind since we had lived hand to mouth for several years in the Detroit area. This works for us until our child gets through school. Then maybe, we can leave the corn fields and move to the ocean front. I know we are just a skip across the border but I am amazed at how many people we have met that are from our old town in MI. In fact, one of my child's teachers was actually his teacher back home several years ago. Small world.

Once you get used to mountains, it can be difficult to get un-used to them.
I think people are "going" where ever they can get a job. We are headed to Indiana one more engineering transplant leaving MI. My biggest regret is the house. We will never make what we owe on it. Homes in our suburb are going for 40k a huge drop from the 100 - 200k of 4 years ago. We are taking a huge hit, but after a year of unemployment we do not see any other alternative, farewell MI, hello IN!

Probably a few years away, but I know I won't stay in Michigan. Six months of cold and winter weather is not for me, and I lived here my entire life. Every year I hate it more.
6 months of winter??? Pffff!!
More like 2 months, at best.
We are leaving soon. We want a future for our 18-year-old daughter and we're heading back to Pennsylvania soon. On my job, I talk to alot of small business owners. It is amazing how many of them are closing their businesses to relocate out of Michigan. That is what got us thinking too. This is a beautiful state, with wonderful people, but .....we gotta go. Fast.
