While googling Traverse City to see what comes up in general, I happened to come across the town's newspaper and it advertised the following several positions for the coming school year:

I am not certified to be nor interested in being a teacher...but I figured I have seen so many teachers on the michigan boards heartbroken over their prospects that it won't hurt to help someone else find a job while I see what I can see for myself...good luck!

Public school academies are the only ones hiring. Unfortunately, you can expect to hire in at about 75% of what you'd get in a public school and you and you'll be lucky if you get a 2% "cost of living" (silly thing to call it when it doesn't cover inflation) raise every other year. Definitely not worth moving for.

On the bright side, there is an initiative trying to get off the ground to buy out some of the higher paid teachers in the public schools. If that floats, there may be some openings in the public schools nexty year. I'm crossing my fingers. If this goes, the school I did my student teaching at could lose 3 science teachers. I would hope I'd have a foot in the door for one of those positions if they don't fill from within.

From what I have seen, the cost of living in NW michigan seems to be lower than the rest of the state?

Also, I was more thinking teachers already in NW michigan would be interested...not necessarily someone far away since nationwide teachers just don't get paid very well compared to the local cost of living.

And 75% of something is better than 100% of nothing, far as non-minimum-wage jobs are concerned (long as they don't fall grossly short of the cost of living of the area,as the teaching jobs in miami do unless you are willing to risk your very life in the hood schools, for example)...just a glass half full approach.
