As to the airport issue: when the weather is bad you can count on planes flying over Allen Park. And if the weather is bad that usually means that the cieling is low so those planes are flying lower than normal. I wouldn't live in Allen Park for that reason.

As to Edsel Ford High School: over the years there have been a number of 'incidents' over cultural issues between different ethnic groups. Just so you are making an informed decision.

Flat Rock, Woodhaven/Brownstown, or Huron Twp. are far better choices in my opinion. All are in the extreme southern end of Wayne county, and have in fact, more of a rural/small town feel of Monroe. They are closer to the airport than Canton/Pymouth without traveling either I-94 or I-275 ( a definite plus in my book!), but are still close enough to shopping and cultural venues.
Having some experience with Woodhaven/brownstown schools, I have to disagree. I'd take Allen Park over Woodhaven (thinking high schools here). Another good choice I forgot about is Gross Isle (sp?). They have great schools, and, from what I hear a great community.

Cultural issues are one reason I hesitate WRT Edsel Ford but I'm not sure I Have a better option without moving and right now you have to give away a house in Dearborn to sell it. While I love the charter school my girls attend, I'm not so hot on the high school. Seems too many of the good students leave for neighborhood high schools after 8th grade and the students they admit to take their place are often there because of how poorly they were doing at their previous school which means my kids don't fit the demographic.

The one thing I fault Dearborn schools for is not addressing the cultural issue earlier. The city has elementary schools that are segregated due to the fact that different ethnic groups live in different areas so these kids grow up oblivious to each others existence then they're thrown together for middle/high school (right when hormones are coming into the mix strongly). It comes as no surprise to me there are issues. My question is are they as bad as rumor has it. It's human nature to repeat the bad things that happen about 5 times as often as the good ones.

I have also had some experience with Woodhaven/Brownstown- having worked there for many years. My job required me to have contact with other school districts in the area. Looking at it form the viewpoint of a parent or an educator, I would still take W/B or Southgate over Allen Park or Dearborn.

My experience is that college admissions offices would not agree. Allen Park would top this list and I'm pretty sure Dearborn high beats Woodhaven here as well. According to greatschools.com, Dearborn high, Southgate high and Allen Park high all out rank Woodhaven high. Dearborn high, Southgate high and Allen Park high all get a ranking of 7 out of 10 while Woodhaven high was given a ranking of 6 out of 10.

As a parent, the high school ranking is what matters the most to me as that will be used to determine which schools my children can attend. For comparison both Plymouth/canton and Grosse ile high rank 10 out of 10. My pick would be Grosse Ile simply because I don't like the traffic congestion I'd face on my commute from Plymouth/Canton.

Unfortunately, for me, Edsel Ford only ranks a 5 - EEEK - and I'm sure they're way down the college admissions offices most desired list. Man I wish I'd moved to the other side of Deaborn or Allen Park or, better yet, Gross Ile or Plymouth/Canton. I was too busy looking for a bargain on a house to think 10 years off into the future. A lot of good that did me - ugh.

What parent wants their child in a school described as "Not as bad as some"?

Probably true, I don't have kids so tend not to think about it too much but the parents who live near me seem very happy with the schools.

As to the strip clubs, have you driven near the airport lately? I drive down middlebelt road every day and drive by more than one just on that road.

That's very true, however most of Romulus is very nice, I think your probably only driving the main roads and not going into the subdivisions. We have some beautiful area's.

There are too many good options out there to settle for someplace like Romulus.

No place is perfect. I moved from Allan Park because of the gang problems, and having drug dealers living on my street that the police did nothing about. I prefer Romulus to Allan Park any day. We have crime too but where I am at is really nice.

You need to think of resale value too. You may not have kids and you may plan on never having kids but will that be true of potential buyers when you're ready to sell?

I'll leave Romulus to you. There are much nicer cities with better schools to choose from around here so I don't have to settle for a city with strip clubs and lousy schools. There may be nice areas of Romulus but there are whole cities where the bad areas are nicer than your nice areas that don't have strip club uno.

We love grosse ile. Great schools (and small too only 700 in the high school). A great community. Lots of incredible housing bargains right now. Taxes are a bit higher, but the schools and services are better. Very very low crime. It is a great place. The biggest downside is that it is a little bit secluded. However Woodhaven and Southgate are pretty close and they have most of the shopping opportunities that we need.

Carleton area will be a good place to live, just drive around and check the areas out. Stay out of Wayne County...taxes..and if you have government related business to do you have to deal with Detriot...just watch the news and see how that city is run. Monroe county seat is so much better to deal with and safer. Flat Rock is in Wayne County...

You know, I don't care if the strip clubs are only on the main roads. I don't want to live in a city that has them at all. I want to be somewhere where the schools are good where businesses are family oriented. If the schools were better, I'd love Dearborn. Lots of parks, a beautiful civic center and I LOVE the trees. Lots of huge oaks in my area. But the schools are nothing to write home about.

So Romulus has less drug and gang activity? I don't believe you (remember I work in Romulus - with teenagers). II believe Romulus has more problems than Allen Park. However, I'd bet you can find someone selling drugs in any city. I'll have to google crime stats for the two cities. Now you have me curious.

I just googled crime rates for both cities. I'm going to start locking my car doors when I drive through Romulus. Zero murders per 100,000 people for Allen park: 7 for romulus. Three times the forcible rapes and roberies and five times the aggrevated assaults. If you left Allen Park for Romulus because you thought it was safer, you were wrong. Maybe Allen Park has bad areas and good ones like Romulus????? I don't think they have strip clubs though.

Sorry, tried to paste the stats but it didn't format.
