Could someone tell me about Romulus?
My husband and I are planning to move to Michigan. Anyone have comments/information, good/bad/otherwise regarding Romulus?
Thanks!

The airport (DTW) is in Romulus so it's probably... loud? I also heard from a Romulus police officer to steer clear of that area in favor of nearby areas (Brownstown, Trenton) because of crime.

romulus is, ok, but nothing special. there are better areas close by. i'd prefer canton or maybe belleville areas. you could do better than romulus.

Very loud due to the airport. Lots of traffic around the airport as well. Schools are bad. Housing is cheap though.
Van Buren has better schools but costs a bit more but, Romulus (assuming that's where one of you will work) isn't too far from Plymouth-Canton which has great schools and nice neighborhoods. If I worked in Romulus (which I do BTW) and were looking to move (I am but can't sell the house I'm in), I'd head to Canton and make sure I was in the Plymouth-Canton school district. That would put me about 35 minutes from Romulus but I'm at the southern end.
I would not live in Romulus but there are those who like it. I grew up in Taylor which was close enough to the airports and with comparable schools.

Does anyone really want to live somewhere that's described as "Not that bad"? I'd rather live somewhere described as good myself.

OK, I live in Romulus, yes we have the airport, and "downtown Romulus" has a huge strip club right on Main Street. But there are area's that are very nice. Where I live, Inkster Road and West Road right near Brownstown and Woodhaven, it is very nice. IMHO you could do a lot worse than Romulus. It has rural area's and some urban area's. No the schools are not the best but they are by far not as bad as some. And I live 3 miles from the airport and I never hear it. Some people say they do but I don't notice it and I have lived here seven years. Oh and I have had no problems with crime. We are moving to get away from the Snow though Diane

We lived about 1 mile south of the last poster at Van Horn and Inskter, but we had a Flat Rock zip and a Brownstown mailing address. We never had any trouble with the airport, noise or traffic. In fact, it was AWESOME to live so close when we travelled. Like so much of the area, the lines are fuzzy from city to city, you could find something just a few minutes from Romulus with better schools. It's a nice area, and mostly people are kind and friendly...

What parent wants their child in a school described as "Not as bad as some"? As to the strip clubs, have you driven near the airport lately? I drive down middlebelt road every day and drive by more than one just on that road. There are too many good options out there to settle for someplace like Romulus.
From my experience, places, in this area, to avoid include Inkster, Romulus, Taylor and Dearborn heights (I grew up in Taylor and work in Romulus). Not sure on Van Buren. I don't know enough about it.
If I had to pick some place near the airport but outside of the area where noise is an issue I'd pick Allen Park or Canton or even Farmington hills. If I was willing to commute, I'd head out to the Northville/Novi area.
Seriously, if you want to stay close to the airport, look at Allen Park. Make sure you're in Allen Park schools though. Part of Allen Park isn't. You can buy a nice house for a good price and the schools are good. You're far enough away from the airport that you only get plane noise a few days a month when they use some of the alternate runways (has to do with which way the wind is blowing from what I understand) and they have decent down town area (not like Plymouth but walkable and nice similar to Dearborn).
Dearborn, is ok if you're far enough west to be in the Dearborn High School area. If I Had it to do over, I would have bought there instead of where I am. I'd be much happier living in Dearborn there. I didn't realize how different the different schools are when I bought. I wish I could go back and spend $20K more for the right area. My kids would go to Edsel Ford if we put them back in Dearborn schools (considering it). They've been in a charter school for the past 4 years because my oldest could not handle Everyday Mathematics and my youngest is gifted and they have nothing to offer her. If I didn't have kids who have issues that just weren't being met by the schools here, I probably would have been happy with them so my distaste for Dearborn schools isn't shared by everyone.

Allen Park has three school districts- the far north end is consolidated with Melvindale schools. Avoid it. Students in the south end of Allen Park attend schools. Southgate has a good school system.
As to the airport issue: when the weather is bad you can count on planes flying over Allen Park. And if the weather is bad that usually means that the cieling is low so those planes are flying lower than normal. I wouldn't live in Allen Park for that reason.
As to Edsel Ford High School: over the years there have been a number of 'incidents' over cultural issues between different ethnic groups. Just so you are making an informed decision.
Flat Rock, Woodhaven/Brownstown, or Huron Twp. are far better choices in my opinion. All are in the extreme southern end of Wayne county, and have in fact, more of a rural/small town feel of Monroe. They are closer to the airport than Canton/Pymouth without traveling either I-94 or I-275 ( a definite plus in my book!), but are still close enough to shopping and cultural venues.
