Ive always been able to catch pike right off the fishing docks in Gladstone and Escanaba. If you hit some of the rivers inland and at the mouths that empty into the lake you can catch small mouth. If I were coming to the UP for a fishing trip I would take US 2 to Forest highway 13 and hit the lakes in the Hiawatha Natl. Forest. I used to camp at a lake called Ironjaw and a sister lake that I cant remember the name and there were alot of people putting in and out of these lakes. They always look to be doing good, I imagine they were catching some bass waleye, Northerns and perch. Back out on US 2 in Rapid river or near Namah, st jacques theres alot of small motels and cabins and such.

Also, Its not in the U.P...but The Ausable River has some great bass and pike. And if the fish arent biting all that great, then the scenery will make up for it! I have had some real good days and some real bad days fishing but its always absolutely gorgeous! In fact, I have been a fishing fanatic all my life, and I will almost always take a good river trip over a lake.
