Observation - aside from Jim Harrison, so many books about the U.P. seem to be murder mysteries or people self-publishing or micro-publishing stories about their rather uninteresting childhoods or days in the military or hunting stories that are not very different from everyone else's childhoods or days in the military or hunting stories.

I've just found so many fascinating, truly unique folks tucked into the UP, I feel the literature never does them justice.

One that isn't for everybody and is hard to find is an autobiography called "U.P.". Very quirky writing style, but unique. I stumbled on it in Marquette's awesome treasure, Snowbound Books (which was selected to be a month in a calendar of the best independent bookstores in the world).

Also, don't forget playwright David Mamet's "Lakeboat" about a graduate student spending a summer on a Great Lakes freighter. It was made into a movie with George Wendt and others.

Default New MI Author

A friend bought me this.

Starvation Lake by Bryan Gruley

Murder mystery that takes place in a small northern LP town. I really liked all of it except for the main bad characters um...badness which I won't spoil here but awful. I thought the characters were well fill in.
The author lives in Chicago but grew up in Redford near Detroit and his second/summer home is Big Twin Lake. This is his first book but he plans on more.

P.S. I've been sitting here search my local library (which encompasses all the little libraries in the county) but am not finding the recommendations. But then I am stuck in Ohio so what do I expect!
