Default Michigan (and Great Lakes) novels

I have been enjoying the novels from Steve Hamilton (Ice Run is next) and was wondering if there are any other writers with books set in Northern Michigan or the northern Great Lakes area.

The character in Steve Hamilton's books is Alex McKnight, a PI who lives in a cabin in the woods near Paradise, MI. Great stories and it is so nice to read about settings in the UP, LP and Ontario which I visited many times before.

Moderator cut: orphaned, the post you were quoting was spam

And for the OP, I am trying to remember a couple of the books I have read that were based in Michigan and the surrounding area. There are more out there, and if I remember the titles I will post them for you.

These are my favorites.

Joseph Heywood, Woods Cop Mystery's. These are all set in the UP. He lives in Lake Linden, just north of Hancock.

Christopher Knight, Lives in Topinabee and is called the Steven King of the North

That can't be a good thing though .

Actually I like Christopher North better than Steven King.

Yes, I agree, he is better.
St. Helena and Laurentian Channel are my favorite from him.

Crooked Tree by Robert C Wilson is very good. Lots of Indian lore from the Little Traverse Bay area.

And don't forget Robert Traver's Anatomy of a Murder. Set in Big Bay just north of Marquette.

dagnabit9 is on a distinguished road
Whistle Up The Bay by Nancy Stone - although it's more written for children. It will give them a prespective (?) of life in Upper Michigan in the 1830's.

That Traver novel is terrific. This isn't as far north as the poster requested, but Parrish's South Of Hell is set in Michigan.

Jim Harrison (who writes about other places too) has written some incredible works of literature set in the UP.

My favorites are Sundog, True North, The Beast God Forgot to Invent and The Summer He Didn't Die.

One of my other favorites is a historical novel about native americans in the U.P. near Munising.
It's called A Face in the Rock. I read it in a single sitting.

Thanks everybody, great info!

I also found the Cork O'Connor Mysteries by William Kent Krueger. Most of his books are set in northern MN, UP of MI and Ontario.
