FYI - Antlers is closed - Outta Bizness and for sale. Went WAY down hill when the 'kids' took over. Kind of a shame - it was a local landmark - very cool atmosphere.

I live in the Soo and there are major problems with it. If you are a summer liver than you may not see it.
The biggest problem is that its a big city with a small city attitude. People in stores can be very rude and there are constant employment violations. I come from Traverse City and I think people in the Soo are prejudice and ruder than TC people!

One of the overall problems is the economy. There is a low class and a high class. The lower class lives in town and the high class live on the outskirts. They need more of the middle class to survive. The Soo will be getting a Super walmart here soo, Olive Garden, Lowe's and some others so hopefully that will help. Its sad when Tractor Supplies plus gets almost 200 applicants in one day because people need jobs badly, not just college kids.

That's too bad that Antlers closed. At least it was locally owned and had some character, unlike Olive Garden.

I tried to find what the largest employers in the the Soo were and all that came up were companies in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, like the giant steel mill (ick). It sounds like Sault Canada is doing OK, with a bunch of new call centers opening up and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation HQ. Otherwise, the only other major employer I can think of is the casino and Lake State. Do a lot of people cross the bridge to work?

I think the new windmill farm on the Canada side is going to be quite the sight. If Michigan were smart, we'd be doing the same.

Born, raised in the Sault. Great place to raise kids thirty years ago since there wasn't too much for them to get into. Left when I could. Had to drive several hours to get anywhere near decent shopping. Outfitted kids through Wards, Sears and Penny's Catalog (and it got worse). Unless you are a social genius it is clickish and unfriendly. After ten years I am still marveling when I go into a store in lower Michigan and the clerks act like they are happy to see you.

Granted that was ten years ago, but have paid a couple of visits and, on the surface anyhow, nothing has changed except it's more depressed and depressing.

Personally. the Soo is on my list of ugliest cities in America. Unless someone wants to see the locks, I don't know why they would want to go there.

Dang, sorry, I see I had already posted on this thread. I wouldn't live in the SOO, or in the UP for that matter, but I don't hate it that much. LOL

You said it, not me, but I agree. Marquette, on the other hand, is much nicer.

I was born and raised here in the Soo. I have been trying to get out ever since, but it is not easy. The Soo does have some charm and is pretty safe, a safe place to raise kids...but they will get bored out of their mind. There is nothing here for young ones to do. Not to mention there is no good shopping. The biggest gripe I have with the Soo is that it is so economically depressed. People are not willing to pay living wages here. If you make $9.00 you are doing good. It is frustrating to just always scrape by. I hope that will change soon, but I don't know how.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the Soo, either----IMHO, over the years I think it has slowly----but surely----gotten better, not worse----certainly can't say that about Detroit.
