Ishpening is larger , has more services... They run together these days , its hard to tell where you are at any given time..... These are old mining towns , quite run down in most areas. Negaunee is known for having a lot of bars . Thats about all that left of the downtown. Republic is a Mining community , but surrounding area are some new housing developments . .... The whole area is now part of the Marquette metro zone. The blight that US 41 has brought to the area is less than picturesque these days. , along with the traffic.

Ispheming has more amenities but has higher property taxes then Negaunee. There seems to be a bit of tension with the Ispheming city managment lately. Perhaps that was resolved with the last election cycle?
As for Republic...... I know the one bar closed down (forgetting the name at the moment). There really isn't much of anything there. It's quite isolated from anything else. The largest business in the area (for shopping) is the combined gas station and small grocery up on the corner of US41 & M35. Other then that you would have to go to Ispheming.

If a bomb went off in Republic no one would notice. Laurium is kind of blended in with Calumet. Kind of nice little towns, but not a lot of shopping etc. there. Just the basics. More of that in nearby Houghton/Hancock.

I live in Negaunee, so I have some insight to this. As far as the downtown area of Ish. and Neg., there are basically nothing but bars. Negaunee has a gas station/party store, Ish. has a couple gas stations, and 2 grocery stores (one of which I am shocked has not been shut down by the health dept!). IMO, Negaunee is a much nicer, cleaner community, whereas Ishpeming is like the slum of the area.Having lived there years ago, I would never live there again. Republic is deadsville......absolutely nothing but bars, and a St. Vincent De Pauls, if they are even open.

Then there is West Ishpeming.......?

I worked in Calumet last spring in a job that requires me to do a lot of driving and I thought Laurium was much nicer than Calumet. I thought Calumet was pretty sad actually, very run down. I imagine it was great in it's glory days though. The downtown area could be pretty cool, but I can't imagine revitalization happening any time soon.

There's plenty of radon gas in Republic Highest recorded level ever in Michigan, I believe, was there... 100x the recommended level

Ishpetucky has more stores along that stretch of US-41 where like Ace Hardware and stuff are located. It's also home of Da Yoopers Tourist Trap. Uh, I guess you can call that a service
