Ann Arbor is amoung the most liberal towns in the entire midwest. Gay parades, protests, and they have that majauana festival(hash bash right)????? If your conservative or moderate the towns politics will offend you. Ann Arbor is almost like a piece of Massachusetts that broke off and floated 1000 miles west. Clean town otherwise but VERY liberal compared to the rest of Michigan. Some have suggested Marquette, that is a great town, one of the nicest in the state. Northeast lower Michigan is very nice too, quiet peacefull. Anywhere from north of Saginaw all the way to cheboygan is a good area for retirees. Anywhere near lake Michigan is nice but crowded and expensive.

Personally I think just about everything north of say, Mt. Pleasant is pretty cool. Tons of national forests, the access to the Great Lakes just gets closer the further north you go, etc. So beautiful in the northern half of the Lower Peninsula, and of course the Upper Peninsula.

The UP is more affordable , cleaner , less crime , more snow , but not as cold. Check it out !....... If its city life you want , try Marquette , the best of both worlds.
On my second year retired here , I love it , its home ....finnaly after all the years living in many places all over North America.
