Snowmobile noise is ubiquitous for most of the U.P. from December through March. I've lived in both Alger and Gogebic counties and can tell you that we are absolutly invaded by snowmobilers throughout the winter. Its great for tourism, but if you live anywhere close to a trail, expect to hear the almost constant roar of the sleds, especially on weekends and holidays. If you're used to living near an interstate freeway, it probably won't bother you, but if you want to experience the total silence of the northwoods winter, steer clear of the trails (for those who don't know, most trails are former railroad beds and run next to highways and right through towns).

Definitely do not buy/build anywhere near a snowmobile trail! There are maps all over the place showing where the trails are.

yeah, that is very helpful info, thanks.
I lived in Wisconsin for a few years and there were snowmobile trails through the empty cornfields in winter. I assume there aren't many cornfields in the UP, at least not from what I've seen. |

I don't think we're allowed to post links but if you go to google, type in "U.P. Snowmobile Trails" and click on the first link that pops up, it'll show you a pretty good map of the major trails.
I've ridden them a couple times but I am more of the solitary, quiet winter sports person. My main gripe with them is they are so dang loud and sound travels so far over the snow. This is my experience a couple weeks ago; Just had 6 inches of fresh snowfall, full moon shining brightly, just you alone out in the woods with nature................... . . . then that dreaded sound...BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (okay I can't describe it well).....BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR ...............BRRRRRRRRRRRR The worst part knowing that they are still miles away so now you are forced to listen to them for the next 20 minutes 'til they catch up and pass you. TOTALLY destroys the mood and forget about seeing any nocturnal creatures for awhile. I know it will never happen but I seriously wish they could make even one night/day a week free of snowmobiles within a large area so people like me can enjoy & experience nature as it should be. |

Yes, the sound of snowmachines (as the locals call them) travels for miles on a quiet winter night. And be aware that they go ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!

Thats gotta suck to have to put up with it all night all, i guess they cant enforce a time limit as many people would live on acreage n most of the UP would be rural , semi rural i guess ![]() |
