Not a place one wants to stay on vacation. Okay I've thought about it a bit more. The only way I can see it working is if you were to buy several units right next to each other on the outskirts of the base so you control what that area of the neighborhood looks like. Even then I seriously, highly doubt you would ever break even with the finances. There are many nice motels/cabins/lodges/B&B's to stay at around here, rather then staying at an old base with the questionable elements of society surrounding you. |

You can't make a silk purse from a sows ear !.An old midwest saying that rings true here ! Stay away from the AFB. It would take a lot of federal money to clean up the place, and , a lot of local interest in maintaining the area ( also a lot of time and money). I do not think Marquette County, township, nor the Feds. are up to the job.....There are so many other projects in the area that need funding, and the funds are not available for them ! remember , the UP depends on tourist more than anything else, and there are projects in Marquette that are in need., that would help bring in more tourist dollars.

Thanks, guys, for giving me a more realistic picture of the old AFB. We had actually considered renting there if our house sold before we locate another one we want to buy, but i'm having serious doubts after hearing from the horses mouth, as it were I'm curious - what area would you recommend for short term rental( 6 or 8 monthes), if it becomes necessary for us to move before we locate a new home to buy? |

the norm for me is stay away from anything that was owned by the gov. ![]() thanx for the insight , thanx for bringing up to start with , to be honest ive not had to much thought on property past Escanaba , as i plan to base myself in one of 3 counties been Menominee MI ,Marinette or Oconto WI. Escanaba would be the max i would want to drive if a tenant called for something to be fixed. ![]() |

He said more in that one line then I did in my long ramble! And he's right!
us2indaup- I wouldn't shy away from the base for a short term rental. We did it for five months last year and we may consider it again in the future if we need a place to stay short term. The key is to remember that there are a dozen or so different landlords hoping and praying that you'll pick them to rent from. You hold the chips. We had our landlord drive us around and point out each of his vacancies (think it was 17 that day??). We chose the one that was in the most decent looking neighborhood, farthest away from the ghetto area. Lived there five months and never had a problem (altho there was always drama around us). I think the worse thing out there is petty crime but we had/have a large black dog with a protective streak so that may have played in our favor tremendously. Who really knows. Having said that, providing you have a good credit background etc. etc. I really don't think you'll have much of a problem finding a rental anywhere (not right close to the college) as long as you are willing to commit to a 6 month lease initially and then month to month after that. Just my opinion ![]() |

I will say one thing , at this stage i dont think ill invest in the UP as most of the income is tourist money , but im not crossing it off the list.
I will look into the UP once the family has settled in. Then i will have to find a very good accountant n work out whats best WI or MI to invest in. So far from what i have been reading in the city-data forum MI wont get a very big look in , unless an accountant says make some investments there. Only time will tell what path i take. ![]() |

It helps to hear from someone familiar with the area - it's been years since we've even through the Gwinn area.

Just curious, do we have anyone from the Houghton/Hancock area on here? How about Ontonagon?
