Over the years , we have looked in all the areas. Hancock, and the Keweenaw in general were on our list , however , the area is quite depressed, not nearly as progressive as Marquette. The weather in the Keweenaw can be tough . If I had my choice, just for the scenery, Cooper Harbor, and Eagle River are hard to beat, anywhere in the US. Too bad they are mostly summer places. I do not know anyone who lives there in the winter , but , some must ?
Ontonagon, is a nice place, but , talk about remote ! Just too far from anywhere. Also ,a small town, with limited amenities. Again , the Porkies are nearby, beautiful area, great slopes. If you are looking for the most bang for the buck, this is it. Just remember, its a long way from anywhere. One of the things I have always liked about the UP, was , its unlike anyplace else in the Midwest.( Hard to believe its part of Michigan ) The reason I am moving there now , is , it has took me 35 years to make my way in the day to day work world. I would not have been able to have done what I have done , living in my most favorite place on earth ! Now I can finally retire there. There is something , sort of soothing ,about living on the edge of nowhere. |

Thank you for that summary. Sounds like further proof of heaven to me!
Looking forward to exploring it a bit this summer. Did you find out if you got your land yet? |

marquette is a very nice city to live in. Don't fret about the taxes. They are still quite cheap and Mqt offers quite a bit for what you pay. Stop the sprawl that you see everywhere else and live in the city where you can walk, ride bike or even ski to work, shopping and resturants! Marquette is also 100% open public beach. live in the city and support this lifestyle

if you live in the city you will get the peace and quiet as Mqt does not allow snowmobiles to drive through town. Nice!!

Good point !. Its too late for me , but , I DID buy a property only 2 miles out, and there no snow machine trails close by. That is always subject to change , I know, but , atleast There won't be any trails on my 8 acres !

Can anyone up in Marquette tell me what the job market is looking like? My wife wants to move back up there from where we currently live, Central Wisconsin. The thing is I make good money in my current position. I wouldn't mind moving up there, if I could make what I do now. I am in the IT field.
Thanks for any help you can give me. |

I love the U.P. - I have lived in Germany, Italy, Holland, Indiana, Southern California, New Jersey, Georgia, Washington State and I used to camp in a tent across the country from Michigan to Southern California every year.
When it came time to choose a place to raise my son, out of all of those places, there was only one clear answer - the Upper Peninsula. I currently live in the Marquette area and here's why... The people are friendly. The culture is diverse (due in great part to the University). Marquette General Hospital is a top notch medical facility. Our landscape is unique and gorgeous. Northern Michigan University offers a great education at low cost. The cost of living is VERY reasonable. We enjoy all four seasons and they are each beautiful. The lake offers endless summer activities. The snow offers endless winter activities. Yoopers are quirky and fun and proud of their heritage and traditions. VERY LOW CRIME RATE. The housing market has remained stable when others have faltered. NO TRAFFIC. Yippee! The sense of community is HUGE. (Perhaps the cold winters bring us closer together) On the whole Social Values are in tact. There's a collective spirit here that can't be described- must be experienced. So the winters are cold - who cares. Just hunker down with a good book by the fire when it's cold out. Moderator cut: no advertising here, please Last edited by markablue; 09-10-2007 at 04:47 AM.. |

I was wondering about utilities. I am having a hard time getting set up with wired hi speed internet, HDTV. The comcast folks may not want to install on my mountain. I was thinking of going AT&T all the way. What do you do ? |

How do I know?? My works there and does the set-up! She freely admits that the call center is practically worthless. If you have a specific question about any of the services offered here, PM me and my wife will answer you. If I remember correctly the property you bought is right near where we just moved too (we just moved to N. Sands Township), so "welcome neighbor!" ![]() |
