Default Niles or Three Rivers

I currently live in Three Rivers, MI and I'm applying to a job in South Bend, just over the border from Niles, Michigan. The place I'm applying to is about 1 mile from the state line. The place is about a 45-50 minute drive from where I live now, depending on traffic and red lights. My first choice is to stay in Three Rivers, so my plan is to not move at all, and do the commute (assuming this place hires me, which is no sure thing). All of my friends, my church, and my entire life are in Three Rivers, and I would hate to give that up. However, I would be insane to turn down this job. Am I crazy for wanting to drive from 3 Rivers to South Bend?

If I do have to move, my first choice is Niles. I've checked the place out, and it seems nice. It's only about 10 miles from the place where I would be working, and 35-40 minutes from Three Rivers. Is anyone here from this area? Would this be a good area to live in. I'm looking at renting to start out, preferably a house or a duplex.

Before anyone suggests this, I do NOT want to live in Indiana. I'm a Michigander, not a Hoosier, and I want to stay in Michigan. It makes no difference whether I drive 5 minutes or 10 minutes to work.

Is there any community maybe in between that you could consider? What about Cassopolis, Vandalia or Dowagiac?

I wouldn't move at all. Years ago I drove from Paw Paw to N Elkhart everyday. It may seem far at first but it will go quick after you get used to it. I don't think Indiana does daylight savings time. I remember for 6 months out of the year I would leave for work at 2:30 and get there around 2:20, but then when I went home it was an hour later in MI already.

I would do the commute, maybe you could search for closer job. Do not give up town you are happy in: social lives and the rest of that stuff arent easily replaced and it can take years. By the way I did apply to live in Three Rivers housing, and it is one of my first choices.

Kazoo, so you moved?

I feel for you, because I regret my move so much. I try to buck up and make best of things. But its not the same. This culture denies something called HOMESICKNESS. For some of us of more old-fashioned temperaments, it is a reality.

Yes, I moved last month. Crunched the numbers and figured it made more economic sense. However, it is really taking its toll on me. It wasn't worth it, I'd rather spend the extra money on gas or even have just turned down the job.
