Used to have a vacation property near there...It's one of my favorite areas in Michigan...It's gorgeous and has a wonderful downtown.
Off the beaten path is a great restaurant called The Argonne...best shrimp anywhere north of the Gulf

Charlevoix is a nice resort town an hour north of where I live. John and the late Patsy Ramsey had a home there, I don't know if he still has it or not. One thing they are known for is their mushroom/hobbit houses, do a search on hobbit houses Charlevoix and you'll see what I'm talking about. It is a smaller town, so some businesses do close in the winter. You can hop a ferry from Charlevoix to go to Beaver Island which used to have a king, King Strang.
As far as the schoolhouse goes, I have no idea what you were thinking of doing with it, but if you are serious, you might want to come visit the area first. It's very lovely, but everyone has different tastes.

Nice place. Went visiting with my fiance and stayed a few nights in town. She surprised me with a airplane flight to Beaver Island, a lot quicker then the ferry and a little adventerous. The plane brings supplies and mail to the approx. 600 or so year round residents that live there. It's mostly a resort town, so if your looking to retire there, kewl. But I have no idea about year round jobs there.

We used to rent a house for a week on Beaver Island and loved it so much. Several years we ferried over to our beloved island. We have rented mopeds, four wheel drive and one time a car, on the island. Several times we took our own over in the ferry.
What a special place for a honeymoon Beaver Island would be! One-lane sandy roads it used to be, deserted beaches and blue water.....
The town looked like it did back in the eighteen hundreds. I loved Beaver Island and wish I could go back more often....it is so natural.

Charlevoix is great. If I had a choice, though, I'd live in Petoskey, right next door.

Charlevoix is a up scale place where the people there think they are eliete. I would not move there. first off they have nothing to do, a few upscale shops for the yachts that pull in the summer. in winter the place is a ghost town.
They fought to keep out the wal mart because it would not be in keeping with the upscale fachad they want to project.
They are good at killing people with fire works, for those who have not lived there the vanecian festival a few years back went bad and killed some onlookers.
I would move to petoskey ten times faster than here, and traverse city ten times faster than that. Maybe the ramsies will sell you their home at a discount so they can join OJ and Blake in looking for the Real killers. lol
