Default Things to do in Ann Arbor over the weekend

Hey everybody,

I do these posts every once in a while.

My GF and I, (especially me) love doing road trips to random spots.

Next week our random spot is Ann Arbor (and the beautiful state of Michigan)

We are only there for a day or 2...

Could I get some recommendations as far as must sees, great restaurants etc.

I appreciate any input!

thanks!

Blimpie Burger. Reviewed on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. Don't miss it. Best burger in the area, possibly the State although I suppose some would argue that.

See a show at the Michigan theater or the State theater. Visit the Full moon and have a couple of exotic beers. Walk around campus, especially the law quad. I suppose that you could go look at the stadium, but fromt he outside there is really nothing to see and it is a long walk. Go through Nichols arcade and poke into some of the shops there. Eat at Zingerman's Deli.

Visit Good Time Charlies restuarunt and bar a famous romantic location (I met my wife there).

Go on a picnic in Hell. This is a long trip, close to an hour each way I think. There is nothing much in Hell except a gift shopand an ice scream store, but it is fun to say that you went to hell. It is pretty out there.

I really love the Lord Fox Resturaunt just outside Ann Arbor in Dixbourough, but there are a lot of nice places in Ann Arbor as well. The Earle is good french and Italian. Gandy Dancer - decent seafood in a great setting (1800s rail station).

You can go canoing on the huron River from the Canoe livery at the edge of town. I think it is a Heavenor Canoe rental but not certain. They may not open until June. Not sure again.

There are a few places that you can go dancing. I no longer go dancing in Ann Arbor so I do not know what is still open.

Ann Arbor is a great town to just walk around and wander into places.

That is probably more than enough for a weekend.

If it's a nice day, visit the Arb. It's basically a huge park, with a river and everything. It's a really nice walk on a nice day. Gives you a glimpse into the quieter side of Ann Arbor:

Look at the calendar for the school of music, to see what kind of free events there are. Also, the University's Events calendar. It sounds like you'll be here on the weekend of May 2nd. On May 3rd, there's a Musical Theater Senior Showcase, but it costs money. They're very good though. The Michigan Music school is one of the best of the country, and it looks like this is something they want to take to NYC, so it's probably quite good.

Ditch the car! Drive down Main Street, park in a garage, and spend the day on foot. Most of the best stuff to see is all within walking distance (though some may be a long walk, you'll gain a great appreciation for the city and campus both).

The main areas are:

Main Street: the area along Main Street from William Street in the south to Ann Street in the North. There's a number of shops, restaurants, bars, etc. The main street area also extends to the east till about 4th or 5th avenue.

State Street: Take Liberty from Main Street heading east, and you will hit the State street area. There's everything from stores like the flagship Borders, to coffee shops and restaurants. If you feel like ice cream, grab a Ben and Jerry's or Stucchi's. If you feel like a drink, Ashley's is a great pub that's close to campus but yet has a classy vibe.

At the corner of State Street and North University, if you head southeast along the paths and go between the buildings, you end up in the diag. This is like the heart of the UM campus. If you follow the diag straight through, you end up at the corner of South University and East University. This is primarily a student area (where the undergrads go out at night), but it's worth a look.

There's a Michigan softball game on both May 2nd and May 3rd. Tickets are only like 5 dollars for adults.

Basically, you don't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself. Take in a sporting game. Walk around the Main Street, State Street areas. Maybe take in that show I mentioned. Visit the arb (free). I know some places on Main Street have good happy hour specials. Grizzly Peak (main) has $2 homebrewed pints after 11 PM. Cafe Habana (main) has a happy hour from 3-6 PM if you're looking earlier. Go look at the stadium (Main and Hoover Street areas) While you can't get inside now due to construction, it's quite a sight to see.

But mainly, just walk. You will enjoy yourself far more if everything you do is walking.

Also, if you do go out for a nice dinner, the first weekend in May is graduation. While this shouldn't be a problem, if you plan on eating out somewhere really nice, you may wish to get a reservation just to be sure.

Hope that helps!

Grand Traverse Pie Company (on Zeeb I think) and Middle Kingdom on Main street are good places to eat.

What incredible timing! Saturday night is the time and Ann Arbor is the place for this year's Bad Movie Oscars or Smithee Awards!!! 930 North University Ave on the main campus, the main-floor auditorium. Free food and beverages, no cover to see clips from -- and vote on -- the worst movies in history. Voting categories include Worst Acting, Worst Dialogue, Stupidest Looking Monster, Most Gratuitous Sex Scene and Whoops! (the glaring error category). 7 p.m. to whenever. Parking structure a few blocks away. You are sure to leave with a long list of movies to avoid next time you hit the video outlet.

Thanks for all the responses everybody! my trip was originally supposed to happen last weekend but my car was broken into and I needed last weekend to fix my broken window.

I am leaving tonight, is the stadium open yet? Is there a specific place I should go at the university?
