Cost of Living - Ann Arbor (WCC) Area
Hi, I am currently living in northern Michigan, but there is a really good Computer Systems Security program I'd like to take at Washtenaw Community College.
I don't know anything about that area. I have read that Ann Arbor is really expensive. I will not have much money, and will probably be using some student loan money to pay for an apartment until I land a part time job.
My question is, are there cheap places to rent around the college? I'd like to be close to school if at all possible. Also, what is the area like? Are there many things to do?
Thanks for any info!

WCC is on the eastern extremity of Ann Arbor, literally a street away from Ypsilanti. There are some apartments right down the street from WCC, prices range from 6-700/mo for a 1BDR up to 800+ at some of the nicer locals. WCC is very close to Eastern Michigan, which is just down the street, also there are some cheaper complexes closer to there, that house mostly students. In your situation I would recommend staying on the Ann Arbor/Ypsi line if you wish to stay cheap...getting a one bdr closer to downtown Ann Arbor will run significantly higher.
The Ann Arbor/Ypsi area has tons to do for a college student, music, art, theater in downtown Ann Arbor, Ypsi has cool coffee shops, night clubs (haven't been in one but I hear they are ok), and lots of book stores in both Ypsi and Ann Arbor. There shouldn't be a shortage of things to do for you...especially if your coming from northern part of the state.
Good Luck!

It's been a while since I've stomped around the Ypsi area; I graduated from EMU in '95 and haven't been back since then.
I can tell ya that the apts around EMU were cheap but pretty rough. I got a kick out of the indoor/outdoor carpeting in the living rooms though.
The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area can be a lot of fun. Good fishin' on the Huron River....

Ann Arbor is horribly expensive, but the farther out you get from there, the less pricey it gets. Even Ypsilanti, right next door, is a big improvement. But most people manage the costs by having a zillion roommates. There are roommate-finding resources in the form of restroom flyers, kiosks in the campus areas and notices in the part bldgs themselves, all over the area.
