Whoa whoa whoa! THAT'S where I draw the line!
I'm no more worried over swine flu than I was Avian Flu, SARS, monkey pox, and whatever other yearly "pandemic" we have. It's like summer repeats are around the corner and the cable news networks are looking for filler, so lets find a new virus and talk about it 24/7 to make everyone panic. 154 cases out of billions of people is a very, very, very small amount. I'm sure it'll grow to a few hundred, maybe a thousand, even so, that's still far less than the number of folks who die annually from just the regular old flu and I don't see any panic about that.

Here's the bottom line: The WHO (World Health Organization) reports a pandemic if it spreads into multiple countries, and they don't have a vaccine on record for it. Never mind if our immune systems pretty much take care of it. If they don't have companies registered to make money on it, they go to Code 5 or 6 (or whatever silly color or number system they have).
I mean, just take a look at this crap:
Swine flu: 'All of humanity under threat', WHO warns - Telegraph
And sites like drudge just lap it up:
DRUDGE REPORT 2009®
Welcome to the overinformation age.
Ahhhhhh, run for the hills Maw!!!

I'm not worried about the pigs. Sure, they are animals that wallow in mud because they have no natural defense mechanism to protect themselves from overheating and getting scorched by the sun, but they are animals.
I worry about the PEOPLE that live like pigs. The ones that let their pets releave themselves in the house and never clean it up, the ones that live with roaches, and the ones that don't take care of themself - rotted out teeth, poor hygene, and just overall "nasty." These people do exist.
|
The thing is, flu was always passable between pigs and humans, as well as other apes and humans, birds and humans, etc. Its true point of origin was still a mystery, last I heard. If we iced every animal that could catch the flu, we'd all be vegans.

In Mexico there have been eight confirmed deaths from the virus, with another 160 suspected swine flu fatalities. There have been 93 confirmed cases in the US, 19 in Canada, 13 in New Zealand, five in Britain, four in Germany, 10 in Spain, two in Israel, and one in Austria. The US has confirmed the first death outside of Mexico on Wednesday...

This is what the WHO is calling a worldwide threat. I never knew they were such a bunch of drama mamas over there is Switzerland.

Swine flu - kill all the pigs.
Bird Flu - kill all the birds.
Mad Cow Disease - kill all the cows.
Oh wiat, the primary type of flu is people flu. That kills more than any of these other diseases. Lets kill all the people and get rid fo the people flu. Besides, there wil nto be anything left for people to eat anyway.

My dad (who rasied bigs as a kid) always said that pigs are only as dirty as the people who keep them" It is true. The pigs do not choose to be locked in pens filled with their own excrement that are never cleaned out. It is the people that decide to keep them that way. If you want to see cows living the same way, go down the 15 freeway near Corona California. The cows stand knee deep all day in their own (*%&#. Do they choose that? No. The disgusting humans who keep them force them inot that condition. (So much for those stupid Happy cows in Claifornia ads, what a crock!) Sorry I digress.
Pigs can be very clean, in fact they make great housepets. They can even be litter trained (usually faster than a cat, becuase pigs are smarter).

It's not that it's more virulent. It's that it's spreading quickly. The issue is what happens if 25% of your ambulance drivers, or nurses or doctors or pharmacists are out with the flu? If a high percentage of the population is sick at the same time, services get to be in short supply.
So, wash your hands, cover your mouth if you sneeze (sneeze into the crook of your elbow not your hands), get plenty of rest, eat well and drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself healthy.

Because these are the people that will cough / sneeze / whatever on you in public with absolutely no regard to the fact that they are spreading their wealth of germs, AND if their homes are filthy .. its a breeding ground for all kinds of nasty crap you don't want to be exposed to. I work in customer service and have really nasty people coughing and sneezing on me with no regard to the fact that its rude and disgusting, and you know their homes have to be bad if you can smell them 10ft away.
