Isn't that a "net migration" map though? For example, it's entirely possible that more Michiganders moved to Ohio than Arizona, but because a lot of Ohioans moved to Michigan as well, it's more balanced out. I just wonder if that would make any difference.

LOL, well wouldn't NET be the only such indicator that exists? Who could actually count where people are migrating.

I'm in East Tennessee and have a hard time NOT seeing a Michigan plate on someone's car when I leave the house. Maybe that's due to me moving from Michigan so that's the plate that stands out to me more then any other...

My mom moved down here from Mi as well, and her church (of about 50 members) had nearly 30 people that could point to their hand and say "I'm originally from here"
<-- he must be from Detroit

The reason you see so many is just like you said. You have moved here as have many many others.

I'm moving to North Carolina this fall to teach after two and a half years of no prospects. One of my new co-teachers grew up an hour away from me, one of my high school buddies moved down after college, and another moved down before her whole family followed suit. Seems like lots of MI expats in NC.

I moved to AZ and have hated it from my first 100 degree day out here. If I could have, I would have moved to WA, similar climate and more enjoyable things to do.

Default Chicago....

There are a TON of people I know from Michigan living in Chicago. A lot of people from Western Michigan, Michigan State, and U of M. Hell, on my street alone, there are three cars with Michigan plates and Chicago Zone stickers (which means they live here).

Why do people live in Chicago? So many reasons, Chicago is what the city of Detroit "could have" been: decent public transportation, walkable neighborhoods, and a neverending supply of bars, shops, and restaurants. Chicago is very progressive (same-sex domestic registry, statewide smoking ban), so even though I pay in rent for a 1BR what I could get a house for in most parts of Metro Detroit, it's well worth it in my opinion.

BTW, most of the transplants I meet from Michigan here are from Metro Detroit: mainly Oakland and Wayne County.

A TON of my friends from HS are in Chicago. I looked into teaching there but nobody interviewed me. Chicago is a fantastic city. It's like the "un-Detroit"

We left the burbs of Detroit in 1993 after I had a horrible experience. There are things I miss about it, but all in all, we made the right choice. Since leaving Michigan we have lived in southern Ohio (within 40 miles of KY), WV and have come back to extreme eastern Kentucky. The hills are so pretty, the weather is WAY better than SE Michigan, very little crime even with the economy the way it is...and our taxes are VERY low. For a 1600 sq foot home on 3/4 acre with 2 decks and 2 outbuildings we only pay $400 a year in property taxes. Can't beat that! If you are interested in Southern OH, it is wonderful. We had a 40 acre farm there but hubby had a heart attack that really did him in for taking care of a place like that. The taxes there are cheap depending where you are, very little traffic, very little crime and some totally wonderful people. I do not recommend that part of WV I was in. The older neighbors were wonderful, but then an undesirable element started moving in with crack and you know happens with that stuff. Best of luck in your search for a new home! If you would like to know more about these areas, please feel free to let me know.
