Rochester Hills Michigan
Hello, my son is moving to Michigan this summer for a 6 month internship in Rochester Hills with Chrysler. He's looking for an affordable apartment that he could sublet or lease for 6 months. We are not familiar with the area and would like to inquire about recommendations for towns withing 20 minute commute. Our main priotity is safety and affordability.
Thanks and regards..

Welcome to The Boulevard
I went through this process when my daughter interned in Chicago last year so I know where you are coming from. The folks on City Data in Chicago were really helpful. The link above is to some short term, furnished apts that interns from my husband's company have used. Very nice, safe complex within a mile or 2 of Chrysler Corp HQ but a bit pricey. If you have a certain budget you are working with and want to consider other options, respond back. If you've been doing research and have some apartment complexes you're interested in, I'd be glad to offer an opinion.
We ended up using Oakwood Worldwide. They offered furnished apts and had a program/package geared especially to interns. They were great to deal with. No hassles ... they took care of everything. I highly recommend them.

bedford square
I lived in the bedford sq apts on tienken and rochester. They are safe and only a 20 min drive if traffic is bad. It was 515 a month for a 14 month lease not sure about 6 months, but worth checking out. The apts are right by dt rochester and should do the job. Good luck to your son, as I had to leave Mi because the job market sucks....

Thank you for responding and your recommendations, we'll definitely check those places out. We are actually working on a budget. He just got offered the internship last Friday and he already signed a lease for an apartment on the fall at SIU so he's stuck having to pay for it unless he finds someone to sublease it for a few months. My wife found a one bedroom in Farmington Hills, Fairmont Park? How's that area? -thanks

Farmington Hills is a nice area, overall. I'm not familiar with this particular complex. When we were researching apts we looked them up on ApartmentRatings.com to get a feel for the complex. There might be some commentary there from residents.
That aside, the commute from Fairmont Park to Chrysler HQ would be about 45 min to 1 hr. The most direct distance is about 25 miles while the quickest (all expressway) is about 40 miles. Either way, you are looking at almost an hour commute each way. Also, the expressway your son would be taking from this location is under construction - 4 lanes each way cut to 2. That will probably add a little more to the commute time.
Are you looking for an unfurnished? furnished? What is your budget? I'm sure we could find some alternatives a lot closer.

Thanks for all your help, but it turns out that he will not be moving there afterall. Chrysler rescinded their offer an hour after my son turned in his paperwork this morning. They told him that they are discontinuing the program due to their current financial situation. Its quite understandable but the way they handled it was distasteful. My son asked them about the stability of the program before he committed to them and they asssured him that the program is still a go. An hour later, they called him back and told him they are not going through it. I guess they really dont have their act together. Anyway maybe that was good thing or else he would have end up with two apartment leases and no job.. Again, you guys are so helpful.. I'll keep those places in mind just in case
he gets another opportunity next year.

The auto industry operates in such chaos, right now; how unfortunate for your son. Once the credit system gets stabilized and the auto companies re-organize thru bankruptcy, we should see some progress. I know I am biased but I would encourage your son to pursue internships/perm positions in this area. Though the downtown area has some catching up to do, the suburbs in Detroit are among the nation's best.
