I think Royal Oak is pretty darn safe. And I single girl in her 20's would freaking love Royal Oak.

Royal Oak is OK; consider fashionable Ferndale if you're workin' down on Fort St. If'n I were you, head west to Novi or Walled Lake.

Not too terrible of a drive, weather permitting. It ain't nuthin' compared to SoCal.

Novi has cheap apts. that are relatively safe; and you're still close to nightlife, shopping, etc.

Canton isn't too bad either, but the I-275 corridor can be a mess. Plymouth or even South Lyon can be quaint.

Brighton is 50 miles west. The commute is an issue, especially in the wintertime. Nice town though.

culture shock comin' your way....

I've never been to MI, have heard lots of good things and bad things(all safety issues)... I've heard lots about royal oak(which by looking at the map is 20 min drive from my work)...Is royal oak safe for a single gal? I hope this gives more info.......
Where on Fort Street? Your safety concern is going to be more at work han at home. ]

20-30 minute commute, then you probably want Royal Oak. Ann Arbor is a bit over an hour.

Again it depends on what you want. Do you want to go to a club or coffee shop in your liesure time, or go for a walk in the woods?

Royal Oak is pretty safe, but it is NOT one of those places where you would walk alone at night while counting hundred dollar bills. Of course crimes can happen anywhere and walkingalone at midnight even in a really safe place has its risks. Look at crime rates on Citydata.

I live in Michigan, Grew up near Detroit but relocated to a town named Howell. Smaller town but still with everything you need. Friendly community. I love the country of it, the dirt roads and watching horse owners ride down the back roads, awesome to see.

In the future, you should be aware that when you ask where the safest place in Michigan to live is, that Michigan is a large state - about 10 hours from one end to the other.

It would be like working in Beverly Hills and getting advice about Northern California, which is precisely what happened.

So, you will be working in downtown Detroit and want a safe neighborhood in metro Detroit (a small corner of Michigan).

Urban - Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham, some of the Grosse Pointes, downtown Detroit

Suburban - Troy, Rochester, pretty much all of Oakland County except Pontiac, more residential parts of the Grosse Pointes.

Are you determined on finding THE safest for some reason? Seems like there's a point where safe is safe and the odds of something happening are so low it's not worth the cost of avoiding a place.

If so, they have crime data on city-data.
