Thats not a bad area. Its right by all the state complexes and a lot of it has been cleaned up and worked on recently. Some houses are still garbage, but there are some really nice ones since that area was made a renaissance neighborhood. Its close to everything and I would say that its a safe bet.

Lansing is a dump? I know it has good and bad parts of town, like any other city, but a dump? That sounds exaggerated a bit.

I am currently in the process of purchasing a house that is located approximately 5 blocks West of the Capital on W. Ottawa St., which is just east of Logan St. I have never lived in Lansing and was wonder how this area was in general. How is the neighborhood overall in security? Cleanliness? You know, just the normal stuff one would like to know about before moving into a new neighborhood. Any and all help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Ottawa is unique because there is a lot more commercial properties on that street than most of the other residential streets in the area. Great location within walking distance of Downtown. I would guess about a 50/50 split between owner occupants and renters in the area (excluding commercial of course). I live just a few blocks away and we love the area. There are some much lower priced homes on Ottawa just West of MLK, which quickly turns super nice and much much more expensive when you get to Jenison. (no one has called MLK Logan in decades by the way)

When I worked in law-enforcement, here was the rule of thumb in Lansing:

You do NOT live on any street that is named after a person, a tree, a county, or a state. Plus, remember: you get what you pay for. In Lansing, a neighborhood can go block by block

I was not able to find Louisiana Street on Google Maps for Lansing?

A good neighborhood runs east of Pennsylvania and off of Mt. Hope (mainly south off of it). It runs against the old Sycamore golf course.

The other one that is AMAZING is actually in Lansing Township (but Lansing mailing): Groesbeck. What a great area! There are apartments there, as well, that are older and are super-cool, I think. I lived in one on Chester where the floorplan was more like a house LOVED IT. And many homes back there are WAY more expensive than anything you would get in the actual city limits.

I would run FAR away from anything downtown, the Isbel Street area (the ENTIRE section there from 496 to Mt. Hope off of Cedar and as far east to Pennsylvania.

Rio on the south side is BAD (that area)

Waverly and Jolly is BAD.

MLK/Willow area (both directions on Willow) isn't great, either.

If you are moving blindly to the city, open Google Maps, plug in the address, and go STREET VIEW. Surroundings speak VOLUMES.

If there are homes that look less than maintained, cars that look "ghetto"/unplated, trash laying around......well, there you are.

Just my own opinion.

I am sure if you called LPD (Lansing Police) they could give you what types of calls they've had in any given neighborhood.

I have lived in the surrounding Lansing burbs my whole life and am looking into possibly moving the lansing. I have a home in mind that is in the Westside neighborhood and the house is on Jenison, north of Oakland. The houses there are hit and miss. Its a mixture. I have looked at different crime websites that LPD offers and it really doesnt seem bad but Im hoping to hear from someone who has actually lived in the area. Any advise would be great and very appreciated!

Great to hear you're interested in possibly moving in to Lansing, Househunter1981. If you're looking north of Oakland, though, you're actually looking in the Old Oakland neighborhood. The Westside neighborhood's borders are Oakland to the north, MLK to the east, the grand river to the south, and the city limit to the west (it's huge - 2,000 houses!). The Westside neighborhood has a website: Westside Neighborhood Association | The home of the Westside Neighborhood Association in Lansing, MI and a facebook page: Log In | Facebook. Old Oakland has a facebook page: Old Oakland Neighborhood Page | Facebook. Maybe taking a look at them will give you a flavor for what it's like in those neighborhoods.

Personally, I moved into the city after living in East Lansing for three years and was very surprised by how nice it actually is. Many of the houses that are on main thoroughfares aren't very nice (Saginaw, Oakland, MLK, Cedar, Larch, etc) but if you actually go into the residential areas many are pretty nice. Plus I'm very happy to be able to take the bus to work if I choose, and even if I drive it's only a few miles each way. I drive so little nowadays that I don't really even notice the cost of gas as I only have to fill my tank once every week and a half!
