I can say now after living in Fl and now NC(have heard we are called halfbacks ) that there is truly only one place I can call home and that is MI. Such a beautiful state. It saddens me to hear more and more of the closings and job losses.

A couple of quick opinions because I need to run to the store. ( I could write a book about my feelings on this subject...well if I knew how to write).

First of all...I have never never ever seen more hatred towards outsiders than I have in NC. Don't get me wrong, I love NC and its beauty(we live in the mountains) and not all are hateful towards outsiders, and many are extremely friendly if you don't come here with a bad attitude. But the words "damn yankee" and "floridiots" are spoken and written much more than I care to hear. When living in MI I just cannot recall other Michiganders having this attitude towards southerners. It makes me very uncomfortable being a yankee and former Fl resident. Although I have taken to calling pop soda, something I said would never happen. Maybe that has helped me blend in somewhat. The y'all, down yonder and have a goodun haven't quite sunk in yet. Unless your my husband who (born and raised in MI) considers himself a true southerner because his parents are from NC and AL. He fits right in here. Even he gives me a hard time for being a yankee....I don't mind, I'm proud and I love him even though he is a southerner lol!!!

Back to MI.....I have noticed numerous Pure Michigan commercials on the national channels (cable, satellite). Can't remember which ones right off hand. Maybe an attempt to change Michigans image? I'm glad the ads are out there. It is a beautiful state that has suffered some tough times.

Have to run.....

p.s. Try being a wolverine fan and live near Boone ASU college town....The App state stores and restaurants in town are filled with prints of the day they beat UofM.....(Go Blue!)
I am not sure that people in the south refer to Michiganders as Yankees. That is reserved for folks in New England. I do know that people in NC are loyal to their state just as we are to Michigan. We love our home regardless of where it is. North Carolina is a beautiful state, just as Michigan is. If we are transplanted to another state, whether we are happy about the move or not, the last thing home grown folks want to hear is how great another place is. NO one wants to be trashed. So the chilly response may not be that they do not like outsiders, so much as they do not like it when people tell them how mush nicer someplace else is or how much better other sports teams are. I love Michigan and it will break my heart on all levels when I leave in a few months. But I also know I have to move on, make new friends and start anew.

After moving from Michigan and living in the Dallas area for several years, then spent some time in Mississippi; I can assure you they are not called "Yankees" they are called "G-D Yankees".

Around Dallas, they'll tell you a Yankee is someone from the north who comes to visit, (north is anything north) and a G-D Yankee is someone from the north who comes to stay.

You don't have to hate it either -- why would you want to laugh? I don't live in Michigan, the only time I might laugh is when I'm sitting in the warm sun and see a big snowstorm has buried everyone in Michigan -- but I know while I'm laughing that a lot of people up there adore snow and couldn't be happier than when there is a lot of it.

I was informed in no kind manner several times: Yankees live in the North, Damn Yankees come to visit, G-D Yankees are the ones who move South.

Some of the people who say that are the friendliest, most helpful people you could want to meet.

I broke down outside Dallas one time, small town called Cisco, and they sniffed out the Yankee in me immediately but were extremely nice and went out of their way. There is still Southern hospitality that can't be beat. You just have to laugh *with them* when they say stuff like that.

When you live in the south long enough you can begin to understand why it is.

Agreed 100%! I still have some great friends down there. Some very friendly people, and some real jerks; just like every other place on the planet that is populated.

That applies to anywhere. It drives me nuts when people that move here complain about things they had better back at their last place. Especially when they complain about weird things, like "why are all the pools privately owned, or you have to pay to go to". "Where we lived in Georgia, there were free public pools everywhere."

I don't know, maybe water and chlorine is free in Georgia??? Like, how do you answer that question?

I would imagine it's even worse if you live somewhere that draws a lot of relo's.

Only bums give MI a bum rap. Just like a free lunch there is no such thing as a free swimming pool unless you live next to the Great Lakes!

The mitten is crazy cool. People from out of state don't like us because we are an alternative to the NY's, LA's and other places with two word names. You have to be born into this cold or a little crazy to appreciate it. Lucky for me i'm both.
