I am not aware of major drug use in the UP. Someone on these forums said that the Soo has some issues with it.

I'm in the E.U.P. Drugs are probably one of the bigger problems here along with break-ins (which might not be too much compared to other areas, but small towns probably pay more attention to crimes like these than othe places). If people aren't busted for drugs, you certainly hear about them. However, we don't hear too much about people murdering or raping others.

I know the Ironwood/ Bessemer/ Wakefield area. No gangs, many still walk their dogs, jog at 2 am after work. many ppl stil dont lock their doors either. Drugs, I guess there everywhere. Maraj. I think mostly. The Ironwwod Daily GLobe had an article or two on meth houses. I think a lot of out of towners bring drugs to the area durring the winter season. Iron River I did hear rumor about big IV drug use and hepatitis C |

There is a big problem with METH in Marquette, dont let any one fool you. The college is exploding with it. There has been several articals on METH in Marquette.
The other problem is there is a bunch of pot growers in the up. they do not have people spying on the mostly open land and can grow in quiet. There have been a few people gone missing and it was presumed they walked into a growing area in the forest and never heard from again. I am not saying that it is a danger to live or go for walks in the up. but it is not devoid of crime or problems with drugs. If you belieive that I have a bridge only 50 years old that connects the lower and upper for a very reasonable price to sell you. |

It's really sad to hear about meth in Marquette, but I am not surprised.
When I buy it, can I reinstate the tokens for frequent users? The stupid prepaid commuter cards they recently got to replace the tokens, well, the cards suck. meh. |

Crime is low in the UP. It's so low, people routinely leave their cars unlocked and running at grocery stores while shopping. Here in Houghton, MTU's campus is consistently ranked as among the top 10 safest college campuses.
As others have noted, there is some drug use. Some potheads. A few meth-heads. These bottom-rungers are the same idiots doing the b&e's. Domestic battery cases are probably higher than reported. When looking at crime stats, be aware that a 100% increase in violent crime may mean something like 12 barfights versus 6 in the previous year. |

crime? Very little, the news has a police and fire section in most towns and they ususally write when people get in car accidents, etc.
Here is the news from Sault Ste Marie. sooeveningnews.com Police & Fire Story created Jan 02, 2008 - 11:05:36 EST. KINCHELOE Citations issued Chippewa County Sheriff deputies were called to S. Wilson Road on Saturday where a vehicle had left the roadway and became stuck in a snowbank blocking a portion of a nearby snowmobile trail. Deputies arrived to find a wrecker was already at the scene, but the driver was nowhere to be found. Authorities had the vehicle towed from the scene. A follow-up investigation resulted in three citations - careless driving, failure to report a property damage accident and failure to change address - for Todd G. Tarbell, 44, of Dafter as deputies closed the books on this matter. There were no injuries associated with the crash and damage was categorized as minor. RACO Missing sled Chippewa County Sheriff deputies were investigating the disappearance of a snowmobile undergoing repairs. According to reports, the sled was operable when it disappeared with the repairman identifying his cousin as the possible culprit. Deputies were unable to locate the operator during their initial investigation and the sled was returned undamaged the following morning. The case appears to be closed at this juncture as the original complainant seemed unwilling to pursue criminal charges. PARADISE Property damaged Chippewa county Sheriff deputies were called to Paradise on Friday after an Ohio driver lost control of her vehicle skidding through the intersection of M-123 and Whitefish Point Road. Reports indicate the vehicle, with trailer in tow, left the roadway careening into the parking lot of a nearby gas station. The trailer crashed into a posted sign, while the Ohio woman's vehicle finally came to rest against a parked vehicle. There were no injuries associated with the mishap and damage was categorized as moderate. There were no citations issued. SAULT STE. MARIE Disorderly person Sault Police were summoned to the 300 block of Johnston early Tuesday morning after a New Year's reveler was reported to be face down at that location. Police rousted the man and were apparently planning to send him on his way, but the man was unsteady on his feet and unable to tell officers where he lived. Calvin W. Odbert, 22, of the Sault was arrested for disorderly as police did not believe he would be able to care for himself if left on his own. He was booked into the Chippewa County Jail. Recreational trespass Chippewa County Sheriff deputies were called to an E. Five Mile Road property on Saturday to investigate reports of recreational trespass involving snowmobiles operating on the constructed bumps and jumps of a backwoods dirt bike track. Deputies followed the tracks to a nearby residence where warnings were issued. No additional law enforcement action was required. Wallet found City police have taken possession of a wallet containing $28 and various forms of identification after it was found outside an I-75 Business Spur discount store. Police attempted to deliver the wallet to the owner, but the man was not home during their visit. Contact information was left at the man's residence providing instruction for claiming the wayward wallet. |

No place in the U.S. is devoid of crime or drugs. But in comparison to every other place I've lived in the U.S. (which are many), the U.P.'s drug/crime problem is so small that it barely even registers on the radar. |
