Default Info on U.P. crime

I remember seeing reference to crime in the U P in a post, but when I search now I can't find it. Does anyone know if any U P towns have a reputation for drugs or gangs (Gwinn, Manistique, Iron River, etc)?
Thanks!

Haha...I've lived in Grand Rapids most of my life & was born in Detroit, both of which are both in the L.P. and I only go up to the U.P. once a year maybe but just a gut answer is that any crime up there would be a joke because there is absolutely nobody there. Of course this is a matter of perspective but I would think that anywhere you go in the U.P. would be perfectly safe. For a more specific and educated answer, hopefully someone else will answer.

Hi there. I don't live in the U.P. YET but, have been getting a lot of good info here on the forum. There was a bit of a discussion on the thread I had started about the U.P. Here's a reply from someone "There are gangs but only 2. GD which stands for Growth Development (not Gangster Disciples though both gangs are basically the same) and the Bloods. Well the wannabe Bloods. They aren't real. GD is though. Not to be worried there is only around 10 members. They don't carry guns or cause problems.
As for drugs. There are lots of drugs in Houghton and Hancock. Lot's of busts. Breaking and Enterings happen alot. So there is a lot of well...petty crime I guess you would say but it does get real annoying real quick. Other than that it's a pretty nice place to live." They were referring to the Houghton/Hancock area for their entire quote. I've also heard the gangs from Green Bay are going into Iron River. I dunno if there's any truth to it or not. You can go to http://www.city-data.com/city/Marquette-Michigan.html and find out what the crime rate was for whatever crime in whatever city, lol. Sorry, didn't know how else to word it.

You can look at any city by googleing demographics for the place. For example, I was able to find out the crime stats for several cities by type of crime. If you really want to go into a deeper analysis, local law enforcement has all the numbers, but in order to get it you must file a "freedom of information" request. This can be done, but it takes time to get a response.

Yes, thats the post I remember reading, although I thought it mentioned Gwinn as having racial (native american) crime. I'm asking because we're selling our house in the western U.P. and will probably have to rent before locating another home to purchase. Rent in the Gwinn area, & on the former A.F.B., is very reasonable. Incidently, for anyone interested in moving to the Ironwood area, our house will be on the market within the next week.

I wouldn't say anyplace is prefectly safe, but in our town we usually don't lock our doors and often leave the keys in our vehicles. On the other hand, I read the police reports in the Ironwood Globe daily and am surprised at the amount of petty crime such as tire-slashing, vandalism, breaking & entering, drinking related crime, domestic violence, and drugs. Safe is a relative term, I think. Compared to Detroit or Grand Rapids, we're great, but theres entirely too much alcohol abuse here, especially among the youth. They feel there is nothing else for them to do, which I say is a load of crap. But thats me, a cranky old lady, talking

I live in the UP and the worst of the crime is drugs. There seems to be a rise in the amount of drug related arrests up here. Those areas are in the western UP and is pretty small. There may be a little rise in crime, but nothing close to bad.

Actually, the former A.F.B. was one of the areas mentioned in previous threads as suffering from bad crime. At least bad in the relative sense of da UP.

Check out Torrid's post here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/michi...ang#post432830

I'm not sure about the situation in da UP, but in the rural areas of northern Minnesota, gang problems among Native American teens has seen a sharp increase in recent years. The Native Mob is the most prevalent of the criminal gangs, but I'm sure there are others.

Jacquart Fabrics manufactures a number of items including the "Stormy Kromer" cap that is famous in the western U.P. and northern Wisconsin. There is also a plastics manufacturing company, but I can't remember the name of it.
A newspaper link that I read is: ironwoodglobe.com
Good luck finding your own piece of paradise in the U.P. I can't wait till I get mine!

I know, I'm replying to an old post, but I just noticed it. The Plastics manufacturing company in Ironwood is Ironwood Plastics, and I've worked there as a "temp" for the past 2 years. The pay is poor for the company employees as compared to the same job in metropolitan areas, starting at around $8.00 an hour, but the work isn't difficult and the people are very pleasant. Anyone with any tooling or engineering experience would be welcomed, although I must add that there has been a work slowdown in recent weeks and my own hours (as a temp) were cut to 24 per week.
The website is : removed

Bad crime at the base?? I just moved from there in September and never had a problem. Granted there were reports of petty crime and reports of drugs as there seems to be in any low income area nowadays...........so?? If that's the worst then that is nothing. I moved up from the southern third of the Lower Penninsula of Michigan and I'm used to hearing about murders/rapes/robberies on a weekly if not daily basis. Here we've had one murder story of a downstate tourist pushing his wife off a cliff as the main news story for months now.
