Default Do most Michigan residents drive US or foreign cars?

Hi All,

We will be relocating to MI (AA suburbs, most likely) from NJ.

My husband thinks it might be wise to buy a US-make car given the area we will be living in. The problem is that my Toyota is paid off and there is nothing wrong with it, so I'm not really excited about getting a different car...

Opinions, anyone?

Plenty of people here drive foreign cars. Sadly, no one has any pride in the auto industry anymore. I've seen more foreign cars on the road here than when I was in the Twin Cities.

Well, it's more acceptable to drive domestic cars in many parts of Michigan, but not really in south-east Michigan anymore, I'd say in metro Detroit it's about 50/50 now. And in Ann Arbor it's even less, probably 60-70% foreign and 30-40% American. People who work for the auto industry always appreciate it when people buy from the domestic three that are based here.

Tell your husband he's silly.

Maybe 40 years ago that might have been true, but not for as long as I can remember. Keep the Toyota, you'll have plenty of company on the roads with other Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Audi, Volvo, etc....

Don't see a problem when considering a lot of Fords and GM's have foreign parts inside and in some cases the cars are made in foreign countries.

You're gonna need a new car soon.

The salt on the roads is gonna eat that car up in the wintertime.

Drive what ya like, especially in Ann Arbor.

You'll be fine.

I drive a Chevy Malibu and Dodge Grand Caravan.

I will not buy another GM car, as they have invested heavily in Communist China and will be importing cars back to the US for us to buy.

I may try a Ford product in the future.

What's a foreign or domestic car these days?

Quote:
The number of American vehicles made outside the U.S. is actually quite significant, while many “foreign” cars are built in American. In fact, one of America’s best-selling vehicles (and one that is also typically American) is actually built in Canada - the Chevy Impala.

Other made-in-Canada cars include the Buick Lacrosse, Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKX, Lincoln Town Car, Mercury Grand Marquis and the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.

Made-in Mexico cars include the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Chevrolet HHR. And as for the the Chevy Aveo sub-compact, it comes from Korea.

On the flip-side, there are plenty of Japanese (and even some German) vehicles built in the U.S. of A. Some of the most significant include the high volume Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, while the Honda Element and Toyota Avalon are also U.S. products. Nissan builds several models in the United States while BMW manufactures the Z4 as well as the X5 and X6 in South Carolina.
