Default places to visit in grand haven area

i am planning a trip for 8 college students going at the end of july and they are looking to stay in Hoffmaster State Park and visit the beaches of Grand Haven. First is this logical? Second what are some local favorite restaurants and things to do while there for a weekend.

thanks

Hoffmaster is actually closer to Muskegon than GH, so you might as well check out some of Muskegon's attractions, such as the U.S.S. Silversides (a decommissioned submarine) and the Muskegon Museum of Art. If the students are interested in architecture, visit the Hackley House and St. Francis de Sales Church. Pere Marquette beach in Muskegon is usually cleaner and less crowded than the beach at GH State Park, though GH's downtown is more attractive. Both towns have special events in the summer, so find out what will be going on when you'll be there.
