I would recommend you take a look to see if you can find any signs of predation...scat, impressions...coyotes could be to blame, although they are most active during the winter months.
Dude, that's bizarre. We were staying at a cottage near Bellaire a few years ago, and at about 5 AM the crows outside were making a tremendous amount of noise. I got up and looked out the window from our second floor room and saw what looked to be a large gray wolf lumbering along in the dark between the cottage and the lake. I say lumbering because it was crouched low and moving a lot slower than a fox or coyote (like a man covered in fur crawling on his hands and knees would act like).

Dogman....LOL.

I've experienced some creepy stuff in the Michigan woods.

It was about this time of year around 2001 that I was awoken from my tent to an ungodly noise. Walked around with a flashlight and....nuthin'.

I was in the Baldwin area, and the next morning I took a little walk around.

Turkey tracks.

Everywhere.

LOL.

I've seen "dog" tracks in the snow while hunting in the eastern U.P. These were HUGE, no way were they from a coyote. I doubt that it was someone's pooch as there were no houses within a few miles. My Dad and Uncle said the same thing:

Dogman.

err...I mean "Wolf".

Same uncle in Traverse City has spotted wolves; prob'ly crossed into the lower via the frozen Mackinac straits.

He also talks about how it is quite possible that cougars were NOT completly eradicated from Michigan. Not to mention "pets" that escaped or that were turned loose. They could definetly thrive in Michigan.

This guy's no kook either, as he's a retired state veterinarian.

My father spotted a wolf in the South Lyon area maybe 20 years ago. He swore to God that it was NOT a coyote or someone's dog.

I'll tell ya my bear story later....

F--k the dogman.......that is ridiculous ...that is a wives tale like Bigfoot which my husband loves to watch on "MonsterQuest". They are more than likely coyotes......I live in the U.P. and have heard them many times out in the woods across the street......sounds like a pack of kids fighting...........VERY cool!!!!!!!!!

Another one that will make you sit up and take notice is a whooping crane. Not too many of them around, but Jeeze-Louise they make some freaky sounds at night.

I worked at the DNR in Pinckney for several years and some of the officers I worked with said that state biologists can't determine what species some of the scat and hair belongs to that has been found in northern lower and the u.p. Don't ever expect to see that in the media though...

After watching this video, I'm pretty sure it was a grey wolf. Same walk (except I was looking down at his back).

The sounds you're describing are exactly like the raccoon cotillions held on top of the Dumpster outside my bedroom window.

I don't hear any howls, yips, or barks. It seems weird any animal would make such a commotion during a violent thunderstorm and they were only several feet outside my cabin, and kept encircling it. The noise was VERY loud. Any one have any idea? I'm very curious.
I would guess coyotes. I was camping in NM one time and a big thunderstorm was moving in and the coyotes were really loud. It was cool, we were tent camping at a lake and you could hear them from far off moving toward the lake. They were making a lot of noise, the thunder was getting louder.

One night my dad in northern Michigan heard loud screaming and fighting sounds during the night from a pack of coyotes. In the morning he found one laying dead in his yard -- apparently killed by the pack.

Whoa, dude! Or dudette, as the case may be. Don't you Yoopers have a sense of humor anymore? No need to come down on anyone like that. I am sure the OP recognized that the comment was made as a good-natured jest. And if you read my entire post you would see that I did suggest a serious possibility. Get a grip, girlfriend, you'll live longer.
