What ever is out there in the deep woods has been there for a long time , long before any white man set foot on this turf. The First Nation Peoples are no fools , they know........
That said , the most eerie sound you will hear , is the scream from a big cat. It could be a Linx , or a Mountain Lion , yes , they are in Michigan , more so than most people think. They are on the comeback.

Mountain lions? I didn't think they lived east of the Rockies anymore. Maybe there are a few in the U.P.?

Mountain Lions have been spotted around Mesick, on my parents property, they saw one twice...and one was spotted about 20 miles from my house just South of Charlevoix.

Elusive as these big cats are , they have been known to attack man. Colorado has had its problems around Denver. The strange thing is , they have a very large range , and with a shrinking wilderness everywhere , they seem to be making a comeback in places where they were considered extinct. Michigan is one of the States struggling with the facts.........Wolverines are an other animal thought to be extinct in the State........So , along with Bigfoot , strange things happen by the light of the moon, by the dawn of the day , that always seem to be just beyond our reach. Maybe Nature planed it that way, its called survival.......

Thanks, everyone! It is kind of funny. Whatever this was actually did sound like a pack of laughing hyenas, except I know there are none in Michigan! The first time I heard them it made me think of whatever sounds a prehistoric dinosaur might make (my imagination was really getting the best of me)! I know it was an animal sound, not a human being. I've lived in very rural areas all my life surrounded by raccoons and opppossum, but never heard anything like this before. Are raccoons actually this loud (since so many of you seem to think I heard raccoons)? The noises seemed to be that of a very large animal (though that could be misleading) and the first time they came in a pack. But why so boldly during a violent and dramatic electrical storm? Most animals would hide away. Unfortunately, there were no foot tracks the next day, the storm had washed all traces away.

I was out camping once and a small band of raccoons came in one night and you would have swore a herd of drunk elephants were crashing through camp.

I don't hear any howls, yips, or barks. It seems weird any animal would make such a commotion during a violent thunderstorm and they were only several feet outside my cabin, and kept encircling it. The noise was VERY loud. Any one have any idea? I'm very curious.

Probably some disgruntled UAW members. Don't worry, just leave a pair of work boots and work gloves outside in plain sight and you'll never see em again.
