I don't hear any howls, yips, or barks. It seems weird any animal would make such a commotion during a violent thunderstorm and they were only several feet outside my cabin, and kept encircling it. The noise was VERY loud. Any one have any idea? I'm very curious.
This may sound crazy but could it be birds? Some nighthawks and others make some wild sounds. Pun intended.

I've lived in very rural areas all my life surrounded by raccoons and opppossum, but never heard anything like this before. Are raccoons actually this loud (since so many of you seem to think I heard raccoons)? The noises seemed to be that of a very large animal (though that could be misleading) and the first time they came in a pack. But why so boldly during a violent and dramatic electrical storm? Most animals would hide away. Unfortunately, there were no foot tracks the next day, the storm had washed all traces away.
You got 'yotes.

Kill 'em.

It could still be raccoons. I have had them as pets and believe me when I say they have scared me more than once when they flip out. When they spook or fight, it can be very loud and ranges anywhere from muted squeeking sounds all the way up to a screaming crying baby. They normally travel solo but in mating season (you guessed it, pretty much NOW) or if there is food to be had, they come together. Most get along pretty well but if competition or fear is involved, they can stir up a nasty racket.

Default Noises from the woods

these noises are undoubtedly coyotes. I am no athority but do have a pack living near my home in boon. Some nights they can sound posessed! Nothing you would exspect from canines. Watch your small pets they are not afraid of my very proud, large boxer, and have made off with several neighborhood pets! -heathercutie

How timely that this thread revived today. On my way home from town I heard that they are going to have a "dogman exhibit" at the Manistee Ghost Ship this week-end. If you are in the area, might be a fun time to go see the Ghost Ship (The old carferry S.S. City of Milwaukee) and help preserve/restore the old gal, while having a bit of fun with the "Dogman" as well.

I sure hope we don't have cougars out this way. I lived on the west coast of Canada, and in the Rockies and we had more than our fair share of the animals. We also had a lot of attacks on children and pets. They are nasty and deadly....I would take bears over them anytime. (and yes, we had plenty of them there too).
