I believe the noises you heard were a bobcat. The sound they make when they call sounds like a child or woman screaming. Bobcats usually live near or close to swampy areas and like wooded areas. There is nothing to be frightened off or to worry about, they will not harm you. They live on small rodents, rabbits and squirrels and such. I have never heard of them killing a grown deer but they may try to kill a fawn if the opportunity is right. We live near a lake and swamp and hear them scream from time to time. They are only calling to each other and letting their mates, etc know where they are.

the scariest sounds we have heard around here was a big old tomcat trying to fight off a fox one afternoon, and a screech owl a few feet away in the dark. both were enough to make you have to change your pants. you would not believe a cat could sound like that.
