For most people I recommended zero into a place. rent an apt. for 6 months or a year , then make your buys based on local knowledge , that can not be found in books, on line , or from real estate sales people. You will regret your spur of the moment decisions....most folks do.!

i cant really see what help that would be, except to possibly locate for sale by owner properties. properties that are listed through an agent are on multi-list. i just use realtor.com for that purpose.
heres a link that has newspapers and other things. i do recall ironwood, i think it was that had a large section of real estate ads in their paper now and again, as a feature. if you dont want to over look the for sale by owners, i found websites for you to look at.
how long had the place you looked at been for sale? maybe they would be willing to come down some, if its been listed for some time. id keep an eye on it anyway. good luck

thanks
thanks for those links, todd00.
Actually, we had also thought of running a "real estate" wanted ad. I have used realtor.com and the UPMLS until my eyes are crossed, lol. I've also scanned all the FSBO pages I can find.
As far as "my" Bruce Crossing piece-I doubt they would come down enough-it's about 2x the $ we have to spend (which is not alot). But then again, it's about 4x the land that we need too. Maybe I'll hit the lottery!
thanks for all your help,
Martha

The other option is Kentucky.
So, help me out. Give me the pro's and con's of life in the UP. I live in Northeastern Ohio right now, are the winters THAT much worse up north?
What other info can you share?

As many people have said, the winters are brutal. My mother owns a cottage and I have found even during the summer, it feels cool up there. I always take sweatshirts cuss they are needed especially in the mornings. The scenery is stunning. I am into photography and the shots I have got up there are amazing. What I dont care for is that it is tight knit and when I walk into the local eatery, the whole place stops and everyone looks like they want to hurt me.

Weedlady......good luck in your property search. I have explored just about every part of the YooPee. Many great areas and it appears that the response posts on this thread are on target.
I hope to retire (in about 8 years) in the Marquette area, although probably not in town. My first choice is (right now) the Champion area. Oddly enough, though, my second choice is the DeTour area (at the other end of the peninsula).
Because my wife is 15 years younger, she will need to work. LOL. That fact may drive me to retire close to Marquette, the Soo, or Houghton.
I only have two requirements.....living in the YooPee and being a relatively short drive to a bar.
Good luck!

no updates to speak of
Thaks for asking. We are still looking for the perfect spot..We are still sure that perfect spot is somewhere in the UP. We were supposed to come north the middle of August to look some more, but circumstances here at home prevented that trip. Now we are planning to head up there October 7 for 4 days. I assume we will see fall color at that time.
There is a place outside of Ontonagon I want to look at. It's up to DH to find a few other spots to make the trip worthwhile.
While we are talking about a trip to the North...
We will be traveling and sleeping in my conversion van-equipped with all the amenities of a full size motorhome..DH feels we will need to run the furnace at night in October. He's probably right. Will I need to be concerned about my holding tanks freezing? Do I need to winterize before coming up there?

Martha,
I'm curious about your van. I've been concerned with losing my job and then how I would survive if I could not afford rent and such. When I see people living in tent cities I always think it could happen to anyone including me. Is it hard to convert a van into something that's livable? How can you get all the amenities of a full size motorhome in such a small space? Any info would be appreicated.

re: my van
Hi Luzette
I have often thought along those lines-about my van-I did not do the conversion, I don't think it would be easy to do. Mine is a Roadtrek-they are a Canadian company that make Class B motorhomes (A class B is a conversion van type). You can search under Roadtrek or Class B RV. Pleasureway is another manufacturer. You could live in it with no problem (although it is a bit small for extended living)-I have stove, refridgerator, furnace, water heater, shower, toilet, air conditioner, lights, bed, table, etc.
The problem is that they are NOT cheap. Mine is old-a 1994 and it still cost me as much as my brand new Honda Civic! Take a look at the Roadtrek website to see what a new one costs-unbelieveable! You could actually buy a full size motor home for less.
The best place to learn about RVs and what would be involved in doing a van coversion is RV.NET OPEN ROAD FORUM. I suggest going there and searching the threads, or join and ask directly. There are several very knowledgable member there who have done this or are in the process of doing so.
hope that helps to answer your questions.
