Living in a Motor Home is fine , in the summer. The weather is too cold and the snow too deep , for winter living in the UP. While you can get some great deals now on used large Motor Homes , I would still consider going south in the winter with it, come back in the spring thru October.
It would be possible to insulate and " convert" a quality unit for winter living , but , most people do not have the know- how or the cash to spend on something old like that. I sold my 1976 GMC 26' coach this spring to a guy downstate for his son to travel the country one year , before college.I used it whlile building my house , ( in the non winter season ). Sold it for 7,000 and it had everything for self contained living,, including a generator. I guess you could shrink wrap one of these units , and live through the winter here. Would be an interesting experiment !.All you would need is a place to park , and propane every few weeks. Cheap living, at its most mobile venue. I had a 38' diesel Monaco for 7 years and loved it , . We traveled all over North America, great memories.

I assume we will see fall color at that time.
There is a place outside of Ontonagon I want to look at. It's up to DH to find a few other spots to make the trip worthwhile.
While we are talking about a trip to the North...
We will be traveling and sleeping in my conversion van-equipped with all the amenities of a full size motorhome..DH feels we will need to run the furnace at night in October. He's probably right. Will I need to be concerned about my holding tanks freezing? Do I need to winterize before coming up there?

We will likely be passed peak color by October 7th. The leaves won't be all gone by then, but the colors are popping quick. I would say another 5-7 days will be peak. (We're in the pictured rocks area).
I am curious why you think the UP instead of Kentucky.

We looked around a bit in Kentucky. Didn't find anything remote enough for our taste. Decided it is too hot and muggy there in the summer, and the ticks and chiggers were too numerous. I know the UP has ticks and chiggers and those terrible flys, but not as bad as in KY. The biggest reason is that the UP has always been DH's dream. KY was my idea until I changed my mind (woman's perogative, don't you know)

Da UP is like no other place. Comparing it with other places is like apples and oranges..........Some times we hate it , mostly we all love it. Right now its Fall , my most favorite time of year , up here.........

I would love to move to the UP. Beautiful up there from what I've seen pics & videos of online. With me being out of work right now though, & my wife having a steady teaching job down here, unfortunately moving to Yooper country is only a desire for me at the moment but not a very realistic choice. :-(

Maybe I'll have to take a road trip to Pictured Rocks next week. Over here in the Marquette I took a hike up to the top of a peak around Harlow Lake today and it's pretty much green as far as I can see. Very little color change here so far.
I was told by a friend who went to Ontonagon earlier this week that between Ishpeming and Baraga the colors are changing, but over in the Ontonagon area it was no different than MQT. Still pretty green.
