Daughter moving to Lansing
My daughter is moving to Lansing to attend Cooley Law School Downtown. We have to find her an apt and will be going up in July. Having never been to MI I would like some suggestions on what areas to stay away from and what areas would be best to look in for apts. Want to find a good area that's close to school but in a good area.

I recommend the area of Okemos/Meridian Township. It is a safe and family-oriented area about 20 mins from downtown Lansing. There are parts of downtown Lansing that are not that great so that is why I recommend staying in the suburbs.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with apts in that price range, but here is one site to try (other than Craigslist): DTN Home

You can actually find some fairly decent places in close proximity to downtown that are pretty cheap. It takes some looking, but I know plenty of people who go to LCC/Cooley and were able to share/sublease pretty nice homes in the downtown area for 350-500 a month. I think Craigslist is the best option there. There are some hit and miss areas of downtown, but for the most part, its not bad at all. There are some really beautiful older neighborhoods in the area that have undergone a lot of changes recently and are in a lot better shape than they were a few years ago.

Driving downtown your usually able to observe/ pin point areas well to live. I think overall you should be okay downtown, though if your looking for apartments I would look across the Lugnuts stadium, around Lansing mall, East Lansing, and a community of appartments not far from jolly exit 11... going towards Okemos.

Housing in Lansing for Cooley Law School
Our son just graduated from Cooley in 2007. We had so much trouble finding a nice affordable close apartment that we bought him a large old house within walking distance on N. Walnut. He rented out rooms to other students attending Cooley. It worked out very well. While we still have the house (because of the slump in the economy there), it is still rented to college students and pays its own way. His neighbor hood seemed quiet and I never heard any complaints from the other students who lived with him.

My last sememster at MSU I stayed in a place in Haslett, Lake o the hills I believe....really good price, 5 min drive to MSU so Lansing isn't too much further, on the bus lines, 3 pools, golf course in the community. I liked it. Close to everything without the distractions.
I love downtown EL as well, but this was a last minute, roomate bail out sort of thing I found on allmsu.com....... another good option to look at

As one who plan to leave Lansing myself by fall of 2010, it's really heard to suggest an area. Though I would say look into the near by area, downtown Lansing recently has been getting renovated etc.... also look into Capitol Complex ( something like that), the area is usually safe... not sure about night, but wouldn't expect much. Also look into the East Lansing area, only about 5-10 minutes out, though really varies how far out you plan to drive. As a user posted, also can look into the suburbs such as Haslett, Okemos etc... the city of Lansing is known to have one of the best CATA systems.
17 years old, and have been living in Lansing my entire life ( now soon to change) with recently experiencing one of the worst health care systems in the city.
