Looking for nice rural/secluded setting with cheap rent in Southern Michigan
Looking for something fairly cheap, in a counry/wooded/secluded type area of Southern Michigan. Which areas have cheap rental houses that fit the bill and would be considered " nice" areas to live?

And what do you mean by Southern Michigan? To a Yooper, Southern Michigan could be anything in the Lower. To me it would be anywhere below the I96/I69 freeways from around Grand Haven to Port Huron. A little more specific would be helpful.
There are plenty of nice safe places in any part of Michigan, including Detroit contrary to popular belief.

I96/69 and south, the farther the better.
Just looking for something quiet and private yet not too far away from civilization. Somewhere relatively safe and laid back. And outdoor scenery and activities would be a big plus as well.

Hillsdale, but they are having touch economic times there, it is peaceful though, especially if you were to go out into county away from town.

Saline, Chelsea, etc are part of the Ann Arbor area and are some of the most expensive real estate around. What are you thinking?
I'm not sure what you mean by "the further south the better" or what you are looking for in general. You haven't been very forthcoming.
However Albion is a really cheap little town. I grew up there and like it though its not a hot commodity. Quiet, several rivers run through town, pretty park. A couple of minutes and your out in the country. No jobs though.

You could try Three Rivers. It's only 14 miles from the Indiana border, and very rural. Lots of cheap rentals in the area.

I was also going to suggest thinking about some of the small towns near Kalamazoo like Three Rivers. It's a nice peaceful and quiet part of the state.

If you like small towns Byron, Gaines, Argentine and Durand are all good. They are also not far from larger city/towns like Flint and Lansing. I live near Byron which is a small town but quite rural. Gaines, Argentine and Durand are all close by and very nice and rural as well. There are more farms in this area and the people here tend to enjoy the country. For this generally busy area of the state this area seems to be a little pocket of seclusion
