Need up north vacation ideas.
Heres the deal. My girlfriend and I are both college students. We want to go up north around the lakes somewhere. We'll be going the weekend of june 26th-29th, give or take a day. I'm trying to look for things to do, where to go on a budget. We're easy to please, but have to have some sort of plan. I was thinking maybe a day on the island, then a day up to taquamenon? Other ideas?

The Sunrise Shore in the NE LP tends to be much less crowded than the NW areas during the summer. Plenty of things to see stretching from Alpena all the way down to Tawas City. This area is the better choice to visit if you are on a budget IMO.

Are you camping? The KOA campground in Petoskey is really nice and clean and you can even get Kamping Kabins that come with bunks and such.
A word of advice, when we were young and without kids, we did Traverse, Petoskey, the Island, the Falls and made our way to Pictured Rocks. We liked the Museum at Whitefish Point.... It was in early August. It was so cold when we went to pitch out tent at Pictured Rocks, we could see our breath and it was only 7 pm! Just take some warm clothes! We ended up deciding it was just too cold and we didn't camp that night!

Sleeping Bear is great. It's full of people this time of year, but the tent-camping sites at the Platte River campground (south of Empire) are first-come-first-served, so you can get a tent site no problem if you show up in the morning.
If that's too expensive, you can camp for free in the Manistee National Forest along the Manistee River Pathway. It's more of a backpacking thing than a drive-up-pitch-a-tent thing, but it's some great scenery and the campsites are in some great spots (or you can make your own anywhere you want).
In terms of the UP, I think the beaches along US-2 just west of the bridge are among the prettiest in Michigan. They're free too.
You can do the Seney National Wildlife Refuge driving tour pretty cheap.
Pictured Rocks is probably my favorite spot in all of Michigan, that's a nice affordable trip too.
Good luck and have fun!

I think last night we both decided to make sure we go up to munising and pictured rocks. What else is there to do right around there?
