Is Michigan one of the most self-loathing states out there?
Because from my impression, it is pretty bad. I'm not sure if I can find worse.

I can't think of one that's worse. It seems like everyone hates Michigan. It's a shame, because Michigan is such an awesome state.

A million times YES!!! It's weird. I'm moving to NC for work, but when I tell people, they act like I'm getting out of purgatory. Not because of the job, but because it's somewhere outside of Michigan. I keep asking myself if I'm the only person who actually LIKES living here.
I'll admit, the snow is more than many can handle. (I don't mind it myself) It does get cloudy a lot, but it's still a nice place on a lot of levels.

If you can make a living here and love the 4 seasons, Michigan is awesome. Problem is, many folks do not have knowledge-based skills which, as time goes on, are more and more important to have to make a living. Many fine people in this state are in horrible shape work-wise and financially speaking and unfortunately for many, the only option is to move

You know if the economy were great that it would be very different. The other thing is Michigan has always been kind of divided - West vs East, northern vs southern. Detroit region vs the rest. Liberals vs Conservatives. One side got the control and politically dominates, unemployment is sky high and so there is bitterness.

I love snow. I hate south-eastern MI. Too build up, to impersonal. West and north are filled with a community atmosphere. Beautiful scenery, open land outside of the main cities.
But most of the "seasons" are unpredictable. Rain in winter. Snow melts. Than comes back. Then 3'' melt. Than everything is snow under a tough layer of ice. Cars go everywhere. Than it stays like that for a month, and than it melts and you're felt with looking at dead, brown grass, dead plants, until the process cycles through again before the end of winter.
Cold in summer, than too hot. Than mildly hot, than lots of rain, than cold again.
You go from one extreme to the other almost on a daily basis.
And add political corruption, unemployment, unstable economy and you have a very crazy state.

I love Michigan: I lived all over the USA as a child and young adult. This is home; warts and all. Certainly Michigan has had more than its share of bad press what with the economy and the mess in Detroit, government-wise. But I see this airing of our dirty laundry as cathartic and not as complaining; perhaps frustration and worry, and justifibly so. Just demonstrates what an open-minded people we are. And according to my son, we have the best four seasons.
