According to the local newspaper, the Discovery Channel just finished filming this week in the Alpena area for a program on sinkholes. Not sure when it will air.

Cool. One of the state parks somewhere west of there? has a big overlook over an old sinkhole I think.

Just a bit south of Onaway there are some good sized sinkholes, they are in the shoepac Lake area. I've hiked these trails a couple times, it beautiful back there. There is also another lake in the general area that I've seen photos of when a sinkhole drained the lake, it now has water in it though. Cool stuff.

All of NE Michigan is riddled with sinkholes- there are also some in the Lachine/LongRapids area and over in Montmorency county. My brother works for the DNR so he frequently runs across them in the course of his work. Actually, the ones to be featured on the Discovery Channel are located in Thunder Bay and are part of the marine sanctuary.

Thanks for the news! I've been there, and it's a really neat place... far from the crowds too :-).

We have a sink hole right next to our property. It's cool! There was a fox family living in it this spring.

It's neat country up here!
