Yes, they're part of a roots music scene that seems to be flying under the commercial radar and includes people like Daisy May & Seth Bernard, Rachael Davis, and Greensky Bluegrass. You won't hear any of these folks on commercial radio, but they do play venues like the State Theater in K'zoo, the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, the Calumet Theater in Calumet, Meijer Gardens in GR, and the Rothbury Festival.
I say "roots music" for lack of a better description; Steppin' In It defies categorization. Their music blends rock, blues, reggae, Cajun, western swing, country, bluegrass/oldtime, and I don't know what else into a unique sound.
Whatever they are, they're definitely a Michigan band, with ties to both peninsulas. Their Michigan experiences are reflected in their songs. Since I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to MTU, I have to give points to a group whose songs include "Washtenaw County" and "Last Winter in the Copper Country".

If I had a dime for every off the wall musician , I could buy a gallon of gas When thinking of Nugent , I was thinking of music only . Like I said earlier , there is way too many great music acts to even think about choosing a favorite . hmmmm Uriah Heep '' Easy Livin' '' I remember growing up in Birmingham SRC would play often in a teen club a block off Maple and Woodward , saw them many times . Here's a must '' bookmark '' site . Check out some of the lost venue's especially the Grande Ballroom which lists just about every band that ever played there .

Wow. January 1970 at the Grande must've been cool. MC5, the Stooges, et al. Abbie Hoffman was there too. LOL.
