NILES MI: State of the City
Niles, for some reason, is holding on to the idea that its' older homes are a great asset. Well, most of them are rental properties and not well kept! Just drive down any street and look. Drugs anyone?
Why doesn't Niles hold the landlords accountable for upkeep? Why not tax them for NOT fixing up their properties instead for the opposite. Is someone one the city council taking $ under the table? Makes you wonder.
Main Street has great potential, but will NEVER become a place where people want to gather as long as semi trucks are allowed to travel through the city. Just try setting out in front of the Paris or the Hob Nob with friends for conversation. The street was just newly paved, but the beauty of it will not last long with the beating it takes from the trucks.

I'd take older homes over the cookie-cutter McMansions that are so common in the Indiana suburbs. Our old homes ARE a great asset, some need fixing up, but they're better than endless subdivisions.
Where else would the trucks go? On US-12 or 5th Street? There IS no other route for semis to take but Main St.

I love older homes too; but, unless they are kept up they look like trash. Again, have you guys traveled down the streets of Niles lately?

I live there. Yes, some of the homes do look like trash. Others are beautiful. Either way, I would take them over the endless sprawl of places like Granger.

I don't know where walking dude got his stats but we swich all the time. We started in Dowagiac moved to Niles but put our kids in Berrien springs. Mid year we put them in Niles, but are now thinking about Edwardsburg. So from experience here we go Niles is bigger than Brandwine so the school offers more to older kids. However Brandywine people stick together get community involement. Many people will put their kids in Niles until jr high then switch to Branywine. I would sugest interviewing the schools and take your child with you. I have done this serval times and the only one that minded really was Ballard in Niles (goes we cross them off the list) It is state law in Mi school of choice but the district has to okay it. They get money for evey kids so even if they should turn you away because of numbers they won't.

NIles isn't that bad. We live in a country setting on the St.Joe river but only four minutes from Wal-mart. Plus having south bend so close is great for shopping with out all the trafic. You can find bad in any town you live in if you look for it. You need to look for the beautiful stuff instead.

I have lived nationally and internationally, and yes, Niles is that bad. The issue still remains: why doesn't the city do anything to improve the situation? Again, why arn't the landlords held accountable for the upkeep of their rental properties? Why arn't city codes inforced? City government taking money under the table from those landlords?
