Default Any tips to get rid of hornets nest?

Because so many seem to know so much on this forum I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on getting rid of hornets or wasps that are in a wall? Every year these little bastards build a hard to get nest in one of the walls or they find a little crack near the foundation blocks in the garage. I spend a small fortune on wasp spray and this is getting OLD. Any tips?

If there are some in the wall now , it will only get worse when the weather gets colder as they will be digging in for the winter . Some bee's like yellowjackets hibernate . Whatever you do , the safest time is after dark when they are pretty much in for the night and have all returned to the nest . At night , spray where they are getting in and seal the hole/crack right away .

You need to user a wettable powder insecticide, which stays suspended in the air and once finally settled, has a residual effect - I'm not sure for how long, but a lot longer than the sprays which are really one-shot deals and dissipate very quickly.

Possibly for some types of truly effective insecticides you will need a license, I'm not sure about Michigan; that varies state by state. I don't think you can find the professional grade stuff at your local big box store. Maybe online?

If it's an ongoing problem, it may be cost-effective to hire a professional pest control company, they can also advise you on how best to seal up your house so the little buggers don't get in!

I've been in residential construction for many years and have encountered some truly horrific nests. Including a beehive that was producing so much honey it was oozing in through the interior walls. And another house that was infested with wasps indoors - they had a giant hive in the attic and were coming in around the light fixtures. When I encounter them in the course of a job, I strongly suggest the homeowner hire a professional before we continue work.

Not the basic little outdoor nests - those are no big deal and I eliminate those quite handily. But the bigger, hidden hives - I don't get paid enough to deal with those!

LOL!!
That was a hive separating - yes the sensible thing would have been to call the DNR or a local beekeeper, they'd have been happy to come get them.

But then there wouldn't have been all those exploding and crispy bee photos.

Thats pretty funny. If I remember right from when my dad had bee's the Queen had to have been in the swingset somewhere. That was why they flew back up after being knocked down first instead of swarming. They were protecting the queen. It's a shame they did not call someone out to take care of it. They were after all honey bee's. I don't mind them, I hate the hornets wasps and yellow jackets. Bumble bee's seem to keep to themselves pretty good.
