Traverse City Film Festival
This week the 5th Traverse City Film Festival kicks off. What a great event for TC and Northern Michigan. Dozens of films, thousands of people attending, talking, walking and enjoying themselves, and movies that won't be seen elsewhere for months (or longer!). Hollywood comes to the North woods.

Great piece from the Free Press, giving the rundown of the Film Festival and a bit of history about it. A remarkable accomplishment in only 5 years.
I don't buy into Michael Moore's politics all that much, but you've gotta give him credit for doing a heck of a job with this festival. The restaurants and shops in downtown are buzzing, unlike the week of Cherry Festival when many of them suffer the crowds without really doing much business.

Am I the only one who thinks Traverse could become an epicenter of independent film, ala Austin, TX. Then Detroit could continue to grow as a destination for Hollywood films.

I'm curious -- does anyone know what the film industry folks are saying about their recent experiences in Michigan? I'd like to know how they rate our state, both as a place to make movies and a place to come for other reasons. It would be great if they not only wanted to come back and make more movies, but also wanted to come back and buy vacation homes. I've poked around on the web, but all I've been able to find is PR stuff or quotes from film people who are also native Michiganders.

I'm not sure about coming back to buy vacation homes , some actors are spoiled by warm year round weather lol Heston had a place in St.Helens for years so you never know . From what I've heard , the only thing keeping films from being produced here was the cost and now that is out of the way . Also read that we have it all here , beautiful water , beaches , boats , woods , old buildings , etc. you name it . I would expect this list will get longer as time goes on :

There is a open casting call going on right now for a remake of '' Red Dawn '' being filmed somewhere here in S.E. Michigan . My youngest who has community theatre experience has applied , probably as an extra . I think he was expecting to vie for Patrick Swayze's part in the original lol Any actors here I think the info is available on Facebook , search for '' RedDawnExtra's ''
