Yeah unless your a college student there is NO reason to live in Mount Pleasant. The town survives on it's college students (Central Michigan Univeristy)CMU and a rather large indian-operated casino.

By the way the town is very small about 30K and there is no "bad-side" of town only an older side to the West. I went to college here and so did my parents you can ask me any other questions you might have.

CMU is a great school. However, i agree that Mount Pleasant caters only to college students and Casino traffic. If you are looking to buy house, look south of Mt. Pleasant on Crawford rd. There are some good homes just outside of the city and far enough away from the college.

There are some great smaller towns north of Mt. P. (Clare and Harrison) I live in Harrison and it is approximately 35 minutes north of Mt. P. Good schools. No crime. I also have a house for sale here if you are interested in buying. I grew up in Harrison, lived here all of my life. We are preparing to move to Florida this summer though. Do not care for the cold anymore. If you would like any info on Clare or Harrison, let me know.

I grew up just outside of Mt. Pleasant in Blanchard which is a nice small town. There are a few nice places in town that aren't college kid oriented, but they are few and far between. By far the nicest apartment complexes are for the college kids. Most of the complexs for adults are low income. Outside of town there are nice houses for sale. However, unless you are going to college at CMU or you work at the Casino there really is not a whole lot the city has to offer. Very sad.

I am working on my masters now so I am pretty much past the college party days. I live in Woodside Apartments witch is run by hometown reality. It is a quiet area with the majority of residents being adults. The apartments are nice too. For the most part it is a very quiet neiborhood. I have lived there for two years and don't mind it too much. There are a few lower income people living in the complex though. If you can get into the condos that hometown reality has they are pretty nice. Other than that I would look to move outside of town.

Do you have to move to Mt. P? Don't get me wrong, I'm a "make the most of it" kind of gal, but I am moving out of here as soon as possible.

If you are definitely moving- here is the best advice I can give you:
-enjoy the summers! the students are gone, which means traffic is low and there are plenty of parks and a great bike path system
-patronize the downtown scene. we have so many chains that are putting local businesses out, so spread the word that there is such thing as a downtown! there are so many students who live here for 4 years and never make it off mission and *****rd streets.
-personally I would hesitate when buying a home here, at least right away. a friend of mine has had a beautiful and modestly priced home for sale for a year now with almost no bites. unless you plan on keeping it for a while, choose carefully.
-go exploring around town. the good thing is you're 2 hours from lakes and fun. the bad news is you're 2 hours from lakes and fun. check out silver lake to the west, traverse city and torch lake around the 4th of July, and you're close enough so you might as well go see the U.P. (if you haven't already been there)

It's pretty gray here, but the summers can't be beat. Make sure you go tubing on the Chippewa River, but remember to pick up after yourself (most of the college students don't seem to understand that concept).

Best of luck!

I lived in Mt P for several years I loved it I worked downtown and my kids went to a charter school which I loved then they got to the age that they had to go to a dif school and mt p public schools are horrible if you ask me they just don't care about the kids at least that is what I got out of it but it is a really good place to live if you are without kids

I moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1982. I found the people to be clicky. In fact I was asked, why did I move to Mt. Pleasant. If your not associated with the Oil businesss or University, you will be cast out. As far as rental homes, forget it. They do have many apartments for rent. Partlo management is your best bet to find what your looking for. Good Luck.
