Sandy Beaches near Port Huron
We are wanting to take our kids to the beach this weekend. Are there any public sandy beaches near Port Huron? Also any great little spots to eat in town? Best kept secret kind of thing? Thanks a bunch.

Just drive right up the coast - Lakeport, Lexington, Port Sanilac, etc. They are everywhere.
Generally speaking, the Western side of Michigan is MORE sandier, but you have sandy beaches everywhere along the Great Lakes.

Just got back from a great day at Lake Huron. What an experience! The kids loved it. Lots of sand and beautiful scenery. We didn't eat anywhere...but I did slip into Mary Maxim...what a bonus!
We will definitely go back, or try further up the coast.

Lake Huron beaches
Sorry that I found this late, but I'm glad that you and the kids had a great time. We live in Port Huron, so we have pretty good familiarity with the area. We enjoy anytime along the water, and spend hours in Pinegrove Park (south of the bridge) playing backgammon and watching the ships. While there are beaches here, we really enjoy the public beach in Lexington, about 20 miles north of PH. Lots of sand to play in, and just very pleasant. While in Lexington grab a burger at Wimpy's, and then check out the many cute shops.
There are a number of cute shops in downtown Port Huron also, including several galleries. Weekends is one of our favorite stores (their main store is in Lexington, but now we have one also). There are a growing number of good restaurants downtown, my current favorites include The Black River Cafe, Quay Street Brewery, and The Vintage Tavern. A simple good breakfast for the family can be found at Cavis Grille downtown.
One of our favorite activities (since we are one of the very tiny minority here that don't have a boat) is going out on the Huron Lady II, which is a cruise boat, offering 2 and 3 hour cruises on the river and out into the lake. They also do a dinner cruise two evenings a week to the River Crab in St. Clair, where you dock at the restaurant, eat (select from a fixed price menu), and then return to Port Huron on the Lady, being served desert on the way back. Best advice on this is to plan ahead - they sell out well in advance. The web site is www,huronlady.com . They keep their schedule well update there. Another fun place to visit is Vantage Point, right where the Black River joins the Saint Clair River, and is a great place to fish, watch ships (they have volunteers there with information on the ships, including what ones will be passing), grab a cup of coffee, maybe some ice cream, or even some fries from the fry wagon.
If I can be of any assistance on a future visit just give me a holler at my e-mail. Best wishes.

Thank you for the great suggestions. I want to make one last trip before the weather turns colder.

As we get into fall (the temperature this morning is 50), tends to make me think of the color changes in the trees. A beautiful place to see those changes would be out in the State Game Area (Beard's Hills) just west of town (or also driving up along the lake into the thumb on M-25). If you are real energetic (and have a canoe - I'm not sure about canoe rentals in the area), canoeing the Black River through the State Game Area is beautiful. Enjoy your visit!

well, we ventured out to Lexington a few weekends ago. It was fun to see the swans in the marina. It was rather windy, so the water was too choppy to go in. Wimpy's is a lot like White Castle. It was cheap tho. The stores were closed as it was Sunday, but they looked interesting through the windows.
I think I prefer Port Huron though...especially the beach. It was fun seeing somewhere new. Maybe we will go back to Lexington on a better day.
