Michigan unemployment tops 15%
Michigan unemployment tops 15%
Government says jobless rate is the highest for a state since 1984. Rate tops 10% in 15 states and District of Columbia.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Michigan became the first state in 25 years to suffer an unemployment rate exceeding 15%, according to a report released Friday by the Labor Department.
How depressing! Just another reason why I am leaving this state... how can anyone survive with 15% unemployment? It's ridiculous. This state is going down the drain.... and fast. I hope Jennifer Granholm enjoys her mansion on Mackinac Island while the rest of us struggle trying to make ends meet.

There has been a thread on here now for over a month pertaining to MI's 15% unemployment.
And "how can anyone survive with 15% unemployment?" is a ridiculous statement. There are millions in this state who are employed and doing just fine.

Unemployment is far higher than 15%.There are over 3 million people on food stamps and 800,000 on benefits. Are there people who are doing fine?Yes.There isn`t a pie for everybody.I understand you BabyKong. It`s time that you are calling quits on this slave labor degraded state.Employers doubling worker`s work, essentially doing the job for two or three workers he otherwise would have had. That is why people have left and are going to leave.I think a good chunk just wants to decay around here.Correct me if am wrong.

I don't know anyone who "wants decay around here." And, ahem, what decay exists isn't helped by people who refuse to pay their property taxes and house notes, but look for ways to stay in a house they're not paying for as long as possible, thompson83....
I know lots and lots of people who are working, myself included. Some are doing very well. I don't personally know anyone getting unemployment. I do know some people who have had hours cut, or are finding their businesses down (myself included) but we're all still working.
In fact I know two people who have found decent jobs this year, and one who got a promotion in her present job. There have been recent posts to this forum by people in other states who have found jobs in Michigan and are moving here.
Yes the job situation is bad and people are spending less. It's pretty much the same all over the country so one degree or another. Sure, move to a state that's doing well, like North Carolina. A friend and her family did that two years ago. They're both working, and she is working two jobs...more of their income is going towards housing and property taxes, which are much higher than what she was paying here. You have to look at the big picture.

Don't mean to call you a liar, but if your location is still "SE Michigan" I find this extremely difficult to believe. The only way I can imagine someone in SE Michigan not knowing anyone on unemployment right now would be if they were a complete recluse or they hung out in a very different class of people than I do.
The real amazing number to me is the one that no one has really talked about... the number that includes people who aren't working and who aren't recieving benefits. People who's benefits have run out. People who have quit a job and can't collect. People who took buy-outs and are still looking for a job. That number must be absolutely staggering (upwards of 25% I'm guessing).
Add in those people who's hours have been slashed and those people who have taken jobs at a much lower pay-grade than they should be working at, and I'm guessing more than 35% of the state of Michigan right now is under-employed and would gladly go back to their position/pay from 2007/2008.
I'll admit I'm just taking a stab at these numbers, but I know plenty of people who are unemployed, temporarily laid-off, taking Fridays off, or have taken a job for much less than what they made last year.

Unemployment in the Carolinas is almost as high as MI. Drove thru NC and SC earlier this summer, and saw more "for sale" signs than in MI.

I live in SE michigan and I know only one person who is getting unemployement. I know OF quite a few others, but I do not know them. Of the people that I actually know, all but one are retired or working. Many of them are working reduced hours or at lower pay than last yer, but they are still working. The one person that I know who is on umemployment, has been getting unemployment for over a year and a half. I did not know that you could get it for that long.

So are you saying the unemployment statistics are a complete fabrication? No one except a few people you don't know are unemployed?
I don't live in Michigan and I personally know of several people who collect unemployment in Michigan and I think that the reason things seem pretty good is that unemployment is being extended indefinitely and unemployment in Michigan "pays" more than work does in other states.

The other thing that makes you think there are some unemployed in Michigan is even on here there are always at least 3 or 4 threads just the first page with people discussing their unemployment benefits, how to get them, the extensions, griping that they have to prove they're looking for work. I don't think you see that as much with the other states.
