Default Winter question

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on comparing winters in the northern lower peninsula to those in the western upper peninsula. I live near traverse city and my son is heading to MTU in houghton. I assume there is more snow but I have also heard the air is drier near Houghton. Any thoughts?

Close to but not quite double the amount of snow in Houghton, it is also a bit colder as well. As far as being drier? No. Just as damp but colder & snowier.
