Default New Michigan quarter

We'll have to wait awhile (2018) but the U.S. Mint will begin producing quarters called America The Beautiful featuring a landmark for each State .

Anybody every wonder WHY the government is wasting money redesigning the currency? Do other governments do this? I thought maybe at least for the bill changes that it could have been for counterfeiting prevention but they seemed to have missed the whole point -- they never stopped accepting the old bills.
