Milford, MI
Can anyone give me any information on Milford, MI? My family and I moved to MI from MA and we've been looking for homes in the Plymouth/Canton area because of it's proximity to my husbands office. However, a recent visit to Kensington Metro Park brought us to Milford and we got a nice FEEL to the area as we explored the town a little bit. I have two young children and am interested in finding more about their public school system. I have done my homework on the Plymouth/Canton school system but I haven't done the same (yet) on the Huron Valley system. Is Milford a nice place to raise a family? Can anyone tell me the pluses and minuses of the area? Any and all information, and opinions, is greatly apprecaited.

I lived in Milford for 4 years. I absolutely loved it, but we moved due to hubby's job.
We don't have kids, so we were renting in the area. However, there are many, many nice houses in that area. It's also a family-friendly area. Sorry, I can't help you out with schools.
For me the biggest benefit was living so close to the parks...You have Kensington Metropark and Island Lake St. Rec area within minutes of each other, along with close proximity to other parks and trails systems.
You're close to both Novi and Brighton, so you'll have access to shopping, etc. They recently put up a bunch of stores and restaurants near 1-96 expressway in New Hudson, a neighboring city near Milford.
I also lived in Plymouth area. The Plymouth-Canton schools have a great reputation. I absolutely love Plymouth.
Both Plymouth and Milford have cute, quaint downtowns, btw.
The one caution is that it's a hell commute if you live in Milford and are trying to get any place eastward on 1-96 to access Detroit and the Detroit suburbs. You have to time it right or you'll be sitting on the next big east-west freeway which is 1-696 a.k.a the parking lot! LOL
Not sure if this helps, but best of luck with your decision and research!
Hugs,
L

Milford is awesome. I grew up there, actually in Highland which really is the same as Milford. It is such a cute town and the people are very friendly. The only bummer is Huron Valley Schools are horrible. I went to private school while growing up. Huron Valley is a rather large district and I believe that the elementary schools are pretty fair however Milford High School is horrible, even the students hate it. I am not sure about Lakeland High School, but probably about the same. If you have to do public school I would probably stick with the Plymouth/Canton area.

Milford Area and HV Schools
Milford is a great town. Commuting from anywhere outside of a 15 mile radius of downtown Detroit is difficult during the peak travel times. As for schools Plymouth/Canton are among the best in the area. Huron Valley is more mixed but why don't you compare them yourself?
The Mich. Dept. of Education posts their school "report cards" online:

Good luck and welcome to the area.

Hi I have lived in the Milford/Commerce area for the past 9 years now. My son started 1st grade at Country Oaks on Duke Lake Road. This year he is going into 9th grade at Lakeland High. So far he has been a straight A/B student and has a lot of good friends. I give a thumbs up for the Huron Valley School District and most teachers. Between parents who care and a good school district the kids/students can do very well...Best of Luck and Welcome!!
