Default Marquette/Houghton Lake question

Are there any type of I.T./Telecommunication jobs in these areas? I am moving back to MI next summer and was thinking I would really like to try the UP. I will be coming with about $28,000 in cash and I have zero bills. I was born and raised in the area just south of Ann Arbor in a little town of less than 1100 and spent the first 30 years of my life there. I am torn between living outside of Detroit in a rural area or trying the U.P. I was thinking U.P. cause I LOVE and so dearly miss the snow!! Plus as a kid my father and I would go on 2 fishing trip a year in the U.P. and I loved it! This heat and humidity of the South sucks!!

Now that I have some money saved up I am deciding where to go. I just want to go back to the simple way of life. My question is how hard would it be for me to get a job in this field? I know there has to be cable/telephone companies around. I don't care how much $$ I make as long as I can get a little house/cabin and put food on my table. I am a mid 30's single guy so I don't need much.

Any feedback from locals or fellow Technician would be very helpful.

Thanks

Charter is the main cable company up here. To keep an eye on jobs go to Cable TV, High Speed Internet and Telephone Service -- Charter Communications and click on the careers. Enter the various categories you're interested in. Keep an eye on it every week. For just starting out you'll be looking at Broadband Tech in the Technicican and Installation area of the career site.
I really recommend renting for a year up here before purchasing. It's one thing to absolutely LOVE snow...... it's another thing to live with a couple hundred plus inches of it over a six month period!! Good luck.

LOL!! There really isn't much industry up here. Unless you get an IT support job at one of the hospitals/universities/prisons (all of which are hard to come by)..... there really isn't much call up here otherwise. Charter is the only cable company in the U.P. There are a couple phone companies but I've never seen an ad for them hiring here. That leaves Dish Network which seems to use contractors (Charter does too for some of thier basic installation).

Personally from what I've read of your threads, I would go to the west side of the Lower Peninsula. Plenty of rural country yet, plenty of snow, and a far better chance of gaining employment.

Well, here's an IT Specialist job with the City of Marquette, though I don't know if it's the type of IT job you're looking for.
